I have a customer that has a ip office 8.1 release with embedded voicemail. they want to start using voicemail to email. they currently have a hosted email server offsite that is set up for gmail. There IT guys have set up an account for me and said that relay is no problem. I tried different setting to get it up and working with no luck. just wondering if I install hmail server to a local machine, if that will mess up their normal emails? Or will I be just fine.

Think the proper question for an IP Office forum would be why it doesn't work with their SMTP relay, but you should be fine.

Their IT people cannot set up relay for a GMail server. I am not aware that GMail even will do any kind of relay.

Thank you for the response, but after a long conversation with their IT guys, I think the hmail server is the best course of action for now. I just didn't want to go in and break something.

I use HMail all the time. It won't break anything. But you will need to at very least have your ISP configure PTR and RDNS. Anti-spam rules on most servers will block any emails from unconfigured servers. Be sure to configure a MX record in your DNS as almost any server will reject a message from an IP address from a domain with no MX record.

You should be able to setup relay through Google Apps or Gmail

But in saying that,
the current IT company should already have these configured, but it depends on what they are using for mail. Is it Office 365 by any chance?
