My plant runs on a Hicom 300 and I'm taking more responsibility for administering the PBX. I've been using LC-WIN for the last two years but finally got a copy of Procomm Plus and want to start using that. I found the utility disk and copy the files to my PCPLUS directory, so when I dial into the PBX I don't get any gibberish like before, however hitting enter no longer produces a login prompt so I'm thinking the keys may be different? I'm using ANSI so if anyone can advise some basic tips to get to the login prompt so I can login and get the main menu to come up it would be appreciated. Also if anyone can advise what language this uses so I can look up the basic commands for said language that would be an added bonus.

Thanks!

On the utility disk you will find several files named 'pansi' 'pansi3' etc which I believe either have .kbd or .key extensions. There is also a 'tvi910' file. You need to copy them into your base pcplus directory.

Then go into setup and into your terminal settings for ANSI and set the keyboard file to 'pansi3.kbd', and in your TVI910 terminal set the keyboard file to 'tvi910.kbd'.

That should fix your keyboard translation problem.

When you connect to the switch, if you have a standard custom callout adapter (6.5 or lower) connect at 9600 8-N-1, if you have a CCA 2 (6.6) you can connect at 115,200. 9Regardless if you are using dial-up or connecting a cable directly to the CCA).

If you don't have access to the service login and password then everything will be menu driven. If you do, the command language (the commands are called AMO's) is EMML. The easiest way to learn EMML if you don't have access to a manual or list of AMOs is to go in to the menu and choose what you want to do, and then look in the top left corner of the screen for the AMO command. For example, SCSU. The 4 most common action words to combine with the AMO is DIS, ADD, CHG or DEL. Depending on how you are getting access to the system (logging in thru service login vs hitting SHIFT-F5 from a menu) changes the way you enter the AMO. If you hit SHIFT-F5 from a menu then it is referred to as a fast-path code. In this case you jumble everything together - DISSCSU for example, and then press F3 for "go" and fill in the blanks. In that case you can sometimes hit F5 to see what the options are for filling in the blanks - unless it is asking for something obvious like Extension #. In the case of the service login, under Direct AMO, you have to separate the action and AMO with a dash, such as DIS-SDSU. You will answer each question posed (if not optional) and then press Enter. If you have a question in that case you can enter a question mark for help.

Hopefully that gets you started. Beyond that is more than could be addressed in a little forum post!

Very useful information! Here's where I'm at:

I'd copied the utilities to the PCPLUS directory already so that fixed the keyboard translation problem.

I've dialed into my PBX and I get the header message saying "PROCOMM PLUS on-line xxxxx" etc., then I get a V42bis command.

Before I'd copied the utilities if I hit enter a few times I'd get a "LOGIN:" prompt, I can't get a login prompt now. I'm trying to access the default menu when one first dials into the PBX but can't figure out how to get the login prompt; all advice is appreciated!

Thanks,
Scott

I usually don't waste my time copying all the utilities into the directory but it shouldn't hurt anything because you have to tell procomm to run the script before it will do anything anyway. I don't think that's the problem.

I'm not seeing your site, but a more likely problem is that you are having the same problem I have, which is that I don't have s service contract but the switch tries to dial out for help anyway. Because I have a bogus number in the dialer for the service center (they don't like your system calling them when there is no contract) the system cannot make it's phone call, and tries over and over and over. I have gone in and shut off all the error reporting functions, and Siemens has done so as well, but they keep magically turning themselves back on.

Anyway, the switch dials out on the same port you dial into - unless you're not dialing in to your established service phone line. Sometimes I try to call in and get busy, and other times I call in and connect, and I can hit enter as many times as I want and will get no response (because the system is trying to dial out). if you sit there long enough you will see the "AT" command to init the modem, and then you will see some kind of dial string. Hang in there and you will eventually see ATZ when it gives up - then smack your return key 4 times quickly and you will get a login prompt.

I have found that I can move things along a bit faster by typing OK <enter> after each modem command, but I still have to wait for the timeout after it dials. I have tried typing BUSY and stuff after that but it pays no attention.

That's my guess for your connection problem. Be patient and sit there while connected and see if it goes thru that sequence. It's even worse sometimes with LC-Win, when you have to wait for it to time out a couple of times in the "Contacting the system" phase before it finally logs in.

If that's not it, post the "V42bis command" you see on the screen so I can see what it is.
