Hi everyone, first of all I am grateful for all of your advice. Here is my problem: My brother has been using my computer and I suspect there are viruses on my computer. First this thing disabled norton and now my norton control center says "autoprotect: OFF, Email Scanning: ERROR. OK, here is where everything stops making sense. 1) I have uninstalled/reinstalled MANY times. 2) I dloaded AVG antivirus for free and detected about 60 infected files (50 of which were quarantined by pestpatrol. The rest were infected files. SO, I ran live update and also the other thing (similar to live update) reset the computer in safe mode RAN A FULL system scan and NOTHING CAME OUT. NEXT, after rebooting, the stupid norton message tells me that some virus or other thing is changing the options, and that I need to go to this securities website to run an online virus check. So I do that AND IT REGISTERS 11 INFECTED FIles, I wrote them down : c: edow.exe infected with Download.Adware, c:msbb.exe is infected with Adware. 180search, c:trufkz.html is infected with Adware.cdt, c:winnt\key2.txt is infected with Adware.Blazefind, C:\WINNT\System32\BO2802040113.dll is infected with Adware.VirtualBouncer....I can go on for 6 more files if you want....NOw waht the H*ll are these files that my norton can not pick up? And now look what happened I recently found them and placed them in my quarantine box (in norton) and I canned them and they are not infected!!! i dont understad, I am completely lost and frustrated and confused...please help me...anyoneeee

Download Hijack This. Run a Scan with a log file. Post the log file here and someone will be able to help you.

Here is a link.

After you get things cleaned up, here are a few suggestions for ongoing protection.

MS AntiSpyWare
SpyWare Blaster
Spybot Search & Destroy

Also, what do you guys advise me to do regarding the quarantined files that I put into Norton? thnanks

I also got the same problem... One of my clients has 1800+ threats found the other day... And when my Symantec Server did a auto scan last nite, it came out nothing.. What is going on..???????????

The author of the article detected Spyware, not a virus.

Expanded threats are currently not blocked by Symantec Antivirus CE auto-protect or real-time protection. The product is not designed to do so.

There is currently not a version of Symantec Antivirus available that blocks adware/spyware. Symantec Antivirus 9.x can however detect adware with a manual or scheduled scan, but the scan needs to be configured for this.

I recommend you do a full system scan with a program like Spybot or Ad-Aware on regular bases as well as your regular virus scan. These programs are designed to detect and remove spyware from both your file-system and your computer's registry.

It is however frustrating that you may sometimes have to run multiple anti-spyware programs to get rid of ALL the spyware. That's currently unfortunately the reality, but things are getting better.

Hi JCNY14X,

I am no expert at reading these logs. I can detect the obvious, but often miss the subtle. I thought perhaps that a 'Hijack This' log expert would look at this and help you out. Without researching every entry I can not say what is what.

I can say that Search Hooks are not good...:)

In case none of the really qualified experts see or can respond to this thread, here is link to a tutorial on how to read a log. I have used this to clean up a few PC's in my office. I would love to help you out by researching each suspicious entry in your log, but have time constraints at the moment. There are those here among us at Tek-Tips that can simply 'eye ball' this log and let you know the problem areas. I am not there yet, I still need to research most entries. But I will be watching this thread as I know I will learn something from this.

Keep updating the post and let us know what happens.

Patty [ponytails2]

ps... If no one is able to help you with this log, please run all the 'spyware' suggestions posted above and re-post a log.

JCNY14x,

Try these: Online HJT logfile analyzer (run HJT, cut/paste or upload the logfile, and follow the suggestions):

Also, Trendmicro's online scanner detects AND removes adware/spyware, as well as viruses. I use it in conjunction with Spybot/AdAware:
(Select "Complete Scan" when asked...)

ABAMOTO: I hope my thread is of some help to your problems :)

Oggywan: Thanks; unfortunately, I found out about this the hard way: I spent all day Saturday doing virus scans in safe mode and downloading other virus utilities, which all found nothing. *A side note, the symantec securities website is very misleading in that they led me to their site to do an online virus scan and then this program found 40 threats. It then recommended that I update definitions and intelligent updater and THEN run a scan and it should detect and delete these infected files. However, none showed up in my scan after the updates.

Patty: Thanks as usual for your help :) I was able to fix those scripts or whatever they are - Hijackthis just plainly confuses me.

jml: That link was awesome, I have corrected many scripts in my Hijackthis file. THANKS!!!

JML, what a great tool the 'Logfile Analyzer' is! Here is a star for you. I knew I would learn something from watching this post.

JCNY14x, glad you were able to solve your problems!

Patty [ponytails2]

JCNY14x,

Go to and download Spyware Destroyer (pay the $29.95, it's worth it).

Install it, run liveupdate, then run Windows in safe mode and scan. If the program wants to restart Windows, let it, then start in safe mode again and run another scan. After a couple of scans, it should not find any more problems.

I got a serious infection on my home computer on Monday, and Tuesday I found Spyware Destroyer, installed it, paid for it, and ran numerous scans in normal mode before switching to safe mode. I thoroughly cleaned my system, which is functioning normally again.

I have no stake in PC Tools! I'm simply recommending a tool that was highly rated by PC Magazine, and that worked for me.

Bob
