Help,

I am somewhat new to BackUp Exec. My technical guy moved out of state and left me to learn this on my own. Here is my situation. I have a Windows 2000 Server with BE 8.6 and IDR. The server has a DDR4 20/40GB tape drive that I use for daily backups. Now that I am w/o a tech guy I want to have the ability to rebuild my system from scratch in case of a fatal crash. I believe this is called Bare Metal Recovery. Does IDR does this?

I would like to store the IDR backup file on an 80GB external pocket hard drive. I can then store the drive in a safe deposit box. I will update this backup once a quarter and will rely on this off-site storage to rebuild my system to the latest quarter, and my tape backups to bring it up to date.

My problem is I cannot figure out how to do this. I have read the user guide several times, but am having trouble setting up the external hard drive as a device/media that I can use.

Also, I think I read that I need remote IDR installed to use disk-based backup. Is this correct? If so, is that a different license than IDR? I really do not want to go through the expense and headaches of upgrading my BE. If I need a license key for remote IDR for 8.6, is there some place I can go to buy it?

Please walk this novice through the procedure to do this. If I am incorrect and IDR won't help me rebuild my system from scratch, is there another product you recommend to a cost-sensitive novice?

Thank you!!!!

Frist Backup Exec 8.6 is not longer supported by symantec/veritas and End of life.

IDR will only work back to same or similar hardware. Baremetal restore is the ability to restore to different types of hardware which IDR doesnt do. IDR in 8.6 will not work with Backup to disk media. Only Backup Exec 11 supports IDR with Backup to disk media.

You may want to take a look at Backup Exec System recovery if you looking to do a disk to disk solution backup. That will allow a baremetal restore to different hardware, etc

Steveot,

Thank you for replying so quickly to my post. I realize I am using a very old version of BE. It seems to work well for tape backups.

Perhaps I do not need bare metal restore. My server is a Dell server that is under a 3-year warranty. If it completely crashed, Dell would replace the components in the same configuration. I also have a second identical server that I use for my intranet. In a pinch I could buy a new server for the LAN and use the LAN server for the one I am trying to back up (hopefully this makes sense).

The Backup Exec System Recovery looks interesting - however the $1,000 price tag is past my budget at this time. I know that $1,000 will seem cheap if I ever need to use it. However, I need a cheaper solution.

What is your opinion of 8.6, IDR and tape backups? Would I be pretty safe if I use IDR to create a bootable CD, and then do a full backup including system state to tape?

Have you ever heard of Paragon Drive Backup? They sell a version for servers for $299 that will do bare metal backups. To protect my database I would need to turn off my SQL service during the backup to make sure it is saved.

One final question is that I see I can buy Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery v.6.5 Desktop Edition for around $50. I know I am running a server. But would this work if I turned off my SQL services before the backup?

Thanks again!!! This forum is awesome.

SteveOT,

On another note I just learned I can update my version of BE to 10.0 for around $50 on eBay. This would be an unused OEM copy for Dell servers (what I have) of of Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers with Advanced Backup Option, Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option, SAN Shared Storage Option, and Storage Exec 5.3 Quickstart edition (Dell pn: p8650).

I know this will not support backup to disk. Is there any point in upgrading to this version?

Would this backup my SQL database or do I need another option for that?

All of these versions and options are confusing for someone who doesn't live, eat and breathe this stuff!

MrChip as far as upgrading to 10.0 You have to make sure that you get the licenses you need. Sound like 10.0 license you referencing will work but...Iquickstart edition only allows backup just the local server an no remote servers. Yes you would need a SQL agent license if you want Backup Exec to backup sql. Some use enterprise manager to dump the sql database to disk then backup the sql dumps with backup exec.

You really have to look at home much is you data worth? You spend $1000 to make something work right or if you have data loss or it take days to recover how much money is you company losing when employess are sitting around doing nothing, etc. Just something to think about.

I believe paragon is a disk to disk solution
