Hi all -

Does anyone know of any good products (or scripts, if someone's written any!) that will show a quick and easy summary of the current status of client backups currently running on a Networker server? For example, if someone comes to me and says "what clients are running at the moment, how much have they backed up/how much is left to go and how long (approximately) will they still be running for" ... is there a quick & easy reporting/monitoring tool that anyone knows of that can be run/brought up to show this in one hit?

Currently it's a really painful operation using the GUI (ver 5.5.2) having to go into each Group/SaveSet, and even then it's not easy to read through. I'd like to give this to anyone in the operations group so that they can run it easily for a quick update.

I'm looking at investigating the Legato GEMS Reporter, but I'm not entirely sure this will give an up-to-the-minute picture of what is currently running on the system - and that is what we need. Along with an easy picture of what backups have succeeded and what failed ... :)

Am I asking too much?! Please let me know of your solutions/ideas ...

thanks
Helen

You can use nsradmin to get some of this information.. I've only worked with Solaris backup servers, but I imagine NT would be similar.. So, for example try typing:

nsradmin -s <servername>
show session
print type:nsr

The ouput should give you a lot of what you need. Of course, you can script this in any number of ways.

Good luck!!

Does the Monitor window within the GUI not provide enough information? The monitor window should report what servers are currently streaming data, to what tape, at what speed. If you know roughly how large your servers are, you should be able to base your report through the info returned from the monitor window in the nwadmin GUI.

If you do not have explicit access to your server at the time of your report possibly because you are at another machine, you can run the client portion off a workstation to monitor the backups.

Hope this helps,

Have a look at I have downloaded an evaluation copy of this software and am running it against Vn 6.0.1 on Solaris using the Nt gui on my PC. It seems to provide some of the reports you are looking for. I don't know the cost yet.

I thought they were having some difficulty with the printing of reports in this software. Have they fixed it in the new version or perhaps I misunderstood.

Curious,

You are correct, you cannot print out any of the reports in the downloaded version( 2.1 Beta). I assume that they are aware of this and are working on it for the official release at the end of May. I have not found out the cost yet, but it is based on the following so may be expensive:-

1. BOM Basic Includes:
- Queries module
- Log Filtering Option
- Standalone Device Support
2. Autochanger Module - based on number of tape library slots
3. Reports module - based on number of clients
4. BOM central console - Free
