Pardon my lack of understanding, but I am relatively new to Exchange and how it works. Is there a good 'dummies' book for this?

Here's the problem:

Scenario: Running SBS 2000 with Exchange - no ISA. Using Pop2Exchange to retrieve mail from 3rd party web server.

Three users receive email from three POP accounts. All are set up the same, and they ~were~ all working fine. Then one day, "account c" stopped working. The mail is being retrieved from the web server, but it isn't being delivered to the user's inbox.

I've ruled out mailbox size limit, incorrect POP2Exchange settings, missing email address in AD user settings, and I've not found any duplicate proxy addresses in exchange (yet I am getting a 9514 eventid).

What could cause email not to be delivered to a specific user who is set up exactly the same as the other two in AD and in Pop2Exchange?

NOTE: I have completely removed and re-added this user from AD, and still the same problem. I can set up new users, new Pop connectors and mail is successfully routed. "Account C" can obtain email from other exchange users, but not from outside.

Can anyone point me to some possibilities? I'm pulling my hair (what's left of it) out! Thanks in advance. If I'm not clear enough on any particular detail, let me know and I'll do my best to work it out.

in pop2exchange, remove the user and readd them. If that fails, do this:

in pop2exchange, get emails from ISP for account B delivered to C. Get emails from ISP for account C delivered to B.

Then you'll know whether the problem is ISP/account C or Exchange/account C.

Troubleshoot from there.

Already have tried both suggestions. It appears to be Exchange/account c :)

That is where I am at.

ok, good progress (despite the fact that it isn't working!)

Check POP2Exchange service account on the server. Does this account have permission on AccountC? It needs to have the permission to put the email in there.

Another issue could be a spam filter. If you have one installed, is that picking up the emails instead?

If port 25 is open on the server, try telnetting to the Exchange box and manually email something to them.

Not sure how exactly to check the permissions for POP2Exchange. It installs at its own MMC, and I don't see it in Active Directory anywhere.

I wonder if event id 9514 has anything to do with this? I keep getting this error. In fact, I have to dump my application log once a week because it is so frequent. There apparently is a duplicate proxy address in

/DC=LOCAL/DC=BFLUTI/CN=CONFIGURATION/CN=SERVICES/CN=MICROSOFT EXCHANGE/CN=UNITED TECH/CN=ADMINISTRATIVE GROUPS/CN=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=SERVERS/CN=UNITED-TECH-SER/CN=MICROSOFT SYSTEM ATTENDANT

and

/DC=LOCAL/DC=BFLUTI/CN=CONFIGURATION/CN=SERVICES/CN=MICROSOFT EXCHANGE/CN=UNITED TECH/CN=ADMINISTRATIVE GROUPS/CN=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=SERVERS/CN=UNITED-TECH-SER/CN=INFORMATIONSTORE/CN=FIRST STORAGE GROUP/CN=PUBLIC FOLDER STORE (UNITED-TECH-SER).

However, I do not know how to view or change the proxy address for these services. I've also searched for duplicate accounts for the specific user, and only one result shows up. Grey hair ensues.

Most of this article is completely over my head:
but it appears to address this problem. It presumes that you can speak Exchange, which I am just now learning.

Is there a plain english version, or an easier method? Help is greatly appreciated.

I might also add that this event id began appearing when someone added a different SMTP address in the group policy, but then deleted it because the result was that it began creating dozens of new email addresses for each user.

One more thing: I HAVE deleted all duplicate emails. Should I rebuild the Recipient Update Service (enterprise), and how long does that usually take?

Summary & Addendum:

SUMMARY: One user not receiving mail. Appears to be exchange, not the POP connector. Also getting event id 9514, could this have anything to do with it? Someone added an SMTP address of a different domain in the recipient policy, and duplicate email addresses propagated all over the place. Deleted the ones that I could find. Do I rebuild RUS? How long does it take?

Need to solve the original problem of a single user on my network unable to receive mail.

ADDENDUM: I'm finding my way around ADSI Edit, looking for duplicate proxy addresses manually. Does Microsoft System Attendant store SMTP addresses of mail-enabled users, and what happens if I remove them?

I'm still having these problems, after having gone through the suggestions provided in this thread. Anyone else?

I'm getting EventID 9514 about 100 times a day now, and I have to clear the application log about every 2 days because of this single error.

I'm open to just about any solution at this point.

So nobody can help? Or should I start a new thread?

Hello Nova.

Sounds like you are having a nightmare start to 2005 - I hope this helps! I've started to use Microsoft Exchange Analyzer Tool - It can be run directly from your desktop, and performs a health check on your Exchange setup. It may pickup on this duplicate address, and hopefully help you in resolving the issue. Good Luck!

Wow, it's amazing how many critical issues the Best Practice Analyzer detected. Much of the information is over my head (like how older dll files can be incorporated when it was a fresh install).

Looks like I have more research to do.

I did solve the issue with the user not getting their email. I changed their email address, and now they are able to retrieve their mail. Apparently, the old one must be duplicated somewhere. But I have no idea how to find it.
