One of our locations has an Option 11c using 10 DID trunk lines. We are going to change to a Panasonic system and will require the trunks to be Loop Start.

How can I determine whether the current trunks are Loop Start or Ground Start (I need them to be Loop, but I suspect they are Ground).

Also, if they are indeed Ground Start, can they be changed by the CO to be Loop Start without any problems in the Option 11 until I am ready to have the Panasonic installed? Or would I have to change the programming in the Option 11?

Thanks for any help!

Do you have a test set? Jump on and see if you can draw dial tone.
If you don't have a test set, jumper one of the lines to a jack, and plug a plain old telephone into it and see if you can get dial tone.
If they're ground start, you won't draw dial tone - until you touch one of the leads to ground.

Or - you can log into your PBX, LD 21 - you can print your route config and show the members (and their config in LD 20).

all analog did trunks are loop start. you cannot heart anything on the co side with a butt set.

These are analog DID trunks I'm assuming, if so then you will need to order Loop Start Trunks from Telco if the Panasonic will not take DID circuits. The Analog DID's are not normal trunks to use for in & outbound service they are normally a special circuit used for inbound calling only.

Thanks for the replies!

Hawks,

The CO told me these are indeed ground start trunks. And yes, for Panasonic, I will need Loop starts.

My question to you is: If the CO changes these to Loop start now (before the Panasonic install), can I change/reprogram the Nortel to accept these trunks as Loop start?

I guess my problem is that I don't quite understand how this particular switch routes calls inbound and outbound. I'm used to PRIs from my site... but this other site does not have PRI service. Instead, they have copper trunks.

Talk to your telco and get a quote on a PRI for that site first. The savings in local calling alone may make it a worthwhile investment.

I did this Monday, Nessman. We are going with the PRI :) It's a no-brainer.
