Goldmine Sync on Network vs. Sync Software

Rather than using the sync software to sync one desk top to a lap top, my IT guy decided to sync via a network in our office. Problem is my assistant cannot read my emails/attachments and I cannot read hers. Found out Goldmine is "pointing" to default files on my lap top's hard drive rather than the new "S" network drive located now on my assistant's desk top computer. My question is, "Is this a supported configuration from FrontRange?" Also, should we proceed to fix Goldmine so it reads the proper drives or should we abort this method of syncing and go with the standard "sync software." We do plan to add more seats and users down the line and don't want to invest in a network if issues will continue to develop down the line. Right now, I have a hard time figuring out where the master database is because some emails are legible due to "bodies of emails missing" and other notices by Goldmine. Advice anyone?

It sounds like your IT guy just hosed everything up royally.

I'm a bit confused by what you refer to as 'standard sync software'... GoldMine has a function built-in that takes care of synchronizing the contents of it's database with that of another GoldMine installation. Some good info on the subject can be found here:

FrontRange sells a software called "Goldmine Sync" -- I thought when one has more than one seat, you need this software to properly sync the two seats' data. Isn't this the case?

Also, do you know if using a network drive as the main place to hold data from two computers with two different seats on Goldmine is a supported configuration from FrontRange?

Thanks.

No, GoldMine is a network application, it is designed for multiple users

GoldSync is used when you have remote users or people who move in and out of the office with laptops etc.

So, okay. It seems my IT was right on. Any idea why it's not working? I can't see my assistant's email and she can't see mine? We've figured out where my templates went -- I've saved to the public drive and they're not saved to my personal drive. Got that and understand that. Another Goldmine trained tech said I couldn't see the bodies of the emails because they are saved on different drives. Do you think it's worth trying to figure out what's wrong with the current network or abort it all together and sync the software way? We do have people in and out of the office and have remote users. It's just that now the two users who are using Goldmine are in the same office. But in the future we'll have remote and travelling users. Thanks for your input. ~ Michelle

You don't install two different GoldMine's on two different computers and then point them both at the same database. In a network environment, you simply install GoldMine on the server and then any/all workstations have a shortcut to the GoldMine executable file on the server. There is nothing on the workstations but a shortcut, for all intents and purposes.

You can't see the other person's mail and other data because it's on her computer and vice-versa. You need to sync the data into one of the two GoldMine's and then centralize that GoldMine on a server (which could simply be one or the other workstation on the network) and then combine your licenses within GoldMine and you'd be off and running.

With your installation, the way it is, I would suggest seeking the help of an actual GoldMine expert -- not just an IT guy with a vague idea of how GoldMine works.
