FTP backup works well, but only after a user changes a speed dial...

I have setup FTP back/restore of 5620/5621 phones at a remote site in Germany.
This works well for giving the phones initial values (after a system reboot) or manual backing up when a speed dial is changed.
My issue is I'd like to backup the current Speed Dial settings for all phones - even if a user hasn't changed a speed dial. I cant see a way to do this remotely without asking the users to help by adding/editing/deleting a speed dial to force backing up of there speed dials.
I have enabled Automatic Backup on the phones (does this actually perform an automatic backup or only when triggered by a manual event) but I don't think this helps resolve my situation.
Many thanks, John.

The files should be on the ftp server
all you need to do is backup those files

the files look like 300_data.txt

Yes the files are on the FTP server - in my case in the form 5347_4620data.txt - that is all fine.

My problem is that I want the backup of the phone on the remote site to occur automatically without the users intervention.

Is this possible or will a backup only occur when a user changes a speed dial? For example do backups automatically occur before a system reboot? or every evening at midnight?

Thanks again, John.

Just to be clear as I can see the confusion over the term backup with tlpeter:

When "Automatic Backup" is enabled on an IP phone - when does the phone actually backup to a data.txt file.

The backup will be done with every change
so does the user changes the brightness then it will back up
does the user changes a speeddial it will backup
when the user plugges out the phone and moves over to another lanport then the phone will restore automaticly (if the 46xxsettings.txt is setup right)

So if I understand you correctly - I cant remotely force the backup of telephones - it must be triggered by the users?

Why do you want a backup ???
i do not know if this happens automaticly every night (i dont'think they do)

The office have been using the phones for a while. I don't think they change the phone options and I believe they probably all ready have a number of Speed Dials set.
As I have only just setup 46xxsettings.txt and 4620data.txt there is currently no backup of any of the phones and I don't know what settings they have. It might be weeks or months before they change a speed dial and in that time I will have no backup! Its also a way of remotely verifying each phone is correctly using the FTP Backup/Restore system (by the data file backup date).

You are right there is no overnight backup - I was hoping perhaps a reboot would make them backup but I don't think that is the case either.

Any other suggestions? Otherwise I will have to ask each user to manually add then delete a speed dial - not very professional!

Thanks, John.

a reboot will delete all speeddials and settings in the phone so don't do that

Surely a reboot wont delete Speed Dials?
I thought only a <Hold>reset# or <Hold>clear# would do that?

You could be right
I always keep in mind that when you unplug a phone the memory is empty
I should remember one day :)

The guides big but the process is relatively simple.
Setup an FTP server with anonymous access. I used our Windows 2003 server and then added the built in FTP server.
As we only have one type of phone (5621/5620) I replaced our 46xxsettings file with the following:
SET FTPUSERSTAT 1
SET FTPSRVR 10.3.2.1
SET FTPDIR "\phones" (make sure the directory phones exists under your FTP root folder and it is writable for anonymous access)
SET RESTORESTAT 1
SET OPSTAT 111
Reboot the phone so it picks up the new 46xxsettings.txt file.
Modify a speed dial and it should backup to your FTP server.

indeed modify a speeddial
but that must be done on the phone :)

ask the customer to change the brightness and save
it is the easiest thing to do
