Is anyone heading for Florida to do phone work as a contractor? I'm from out-of-state and wouldn't mind the 1,000 mile drive, but I wonder what license requirements might be to do the work. Any fellow travelers?
So then, a homeowner is not well served by an honest worker offering a fair price to do a good job for a task that needs doing anyhow--if the worker is from out-of-state and doesn't have "enough work at home"? But a local guy, perhaps charging higher rates, who's got plenty of other work he could do, is a better deal? Man, is that cynical. If I were a storm victim and needed XYZ done, I wouldn't care if I got an offer from a Martian as long as it was fair, reliable and quick. If I were proposing to sweep into town and price-gouge the folks, you'd have a point. But I don't work that way.
It would seem that, if that many people were out of service that it would be more important to have service returned as quickly as possible rather than who performs the work. Several months ago we have all kinds of storm damage here, and crews from as far away as Florida were sent in to restore service. We did not have any tornado’s or even a category 3 hurricane, just high winds and about 13” of rain in a month. That was enough to knock down trees, kill power to about 50,000 customers, and of course phone service to a lot of people who need it. Crews here were working 80 hours + a week. That can and will affect the craftsmanship of anyone who works that much without any time off. It did not matter to us that some of these crews that were here were out of somewhere else. It only mattered that service was restored. In my opinion, I would welcome any professional help in a situation like this. I am also sure that the people that are without service would also like to have their service restored as soon as possible regardless of where the person lives that perform the work. Just like any other situation someone should be checking everyone’s work for quality. I may be speaking out of turn here. I don’t mean that anyone that has done phone work should jump and head to Florida. But the customer should be the first priority. They are why you have a job to begin with.
[b}Get over it skip555. You are just flamebait trying to start an argument[/b]
In a bad mood skip?
no I just live 30 miles from from where the eye entered the state
I have customers all along the storm route
I was in punta gorda saturday morning helping customers salvage equipment before looters got to it
I am working with the telcos to get lines forwarded and to keep cusotomers in business
wife and I have been volentering in storm recovery along with helping customers and running a business
Florida dosent need more easy , quick $$$$ bottom feeders streaming in like they always do.
they get here clog the roads , tax the infastructure and impede recovery
if the question was what companys are contarting for OSP , becouse I have truck , tools and lots of OSP experiance to help restore infastructure then great
but instead he is looking to come down and go after my customers
Look, there's no ulterior or nefarious motives here. It's work, like any other. If you see better opportunities in another state, would you feel you're "stealing a job from the locals" to pursue it? If that attitude held sway, no corporations would ever open a branch in new areas lest they detract from local enterprises. You cite the "infrastructure" my presence would "tax", the roads I would help "clog", but nothing about the contribution I would also make to the local economy: restaurant, motel and gasoline business, etc. It's not real likely I'll make the trip anyhow, but I thought it would be worth asking about. So I've got one strong opinion agin' it. Maybe you're the exception; maybe not. In any case, "my kind" will try not to be a burden on those who are in need. Sounds like the local looters are doing enough of that. How sad.
i think the greatest amount of help needed at this time is Telco Subs repairing outside plant infrastructure. Until the power and com grids are rebuilt the aint much for the little guy to do.
I believe florida is one of the few states where the average telcom guy needs to be licensed but that requirement might be waved in time fo disaster recovery as long as no price gouging is going on.
I agree with mikeydidit. I live in South Florida, after spending 30 years in NYC. Everyone in the south is always quick to blame all their misfortunes on all of the so called "out of towners". Quite frankly, there are far more of the skip555 types here that want nothing to do with the "outsiders" because somehow they are stealing from him. Please, southern hospitality my yankee butt.
Generally when I come across someone this against outsiders coming in it is because they are incompetent and scared that they scared that they might be shown up!
you know you guys are right come on down ,clog the roads , compete with displaced indiviuls for housing ,jobs ,food and gas and if it dosnt work out for social services .
Rejoice, many hands make light the Lords work . .

I.m not the one thinking about driving 1,000 miles to make quick money . I have more than enough satsified customers right where I am
I have nothing but contempt for those that seek to profit from the misfortune of others
