Is anyone heading for Florida to do phone work as a contractor? I'm from out-of-state and wouldn't mind the 1,000 mile drive, but I wonder what license requirements might be to do the work. Any fellow travelers?

Skip…
It seems obvious to me that you’re not so much worried about clogged roads or over taxed infrastructure but rather having your “local guy pockets” dipped into and becoming one of the “undercut locals”.

Your self righteous indignation is in high gear. Take a reality check. FL needs/needed help in many areas.

Skip and everyone,
I spoke with a supplier from the South Florida area yesterday and he mentioned a couple of things that Skip is leaving out:

(1) FEMA has the roads blocked and will not let anyone in a damaged areas without checking their "papers" (ID, Vin, Lic Plate, etc.) first. If anyone does not belong in the area they will not be let in.

(2) There is a toll free number that circulates down there for residents to report price gougers. Apparently it is against federal law to raise prices during an emergency and anyone reported as doing so will be arrested. Apparently they take this business very seroiusly out there.

Skip, I know ranting about taxing the infrastructure, etc. is a noble cause (and you have a point) but why did you not mention these two items if you *really* want people to stay away?

In my experience, carpetbaggers care more about being arrested than infrastructure.

Another note is, us outsiders won't be in a position to make any money out there for about a year. Ya can't put phones in a building that doesn't exist or needs to be torn down first.

That's my two cents - flame away . . . ;-)

I have a loyal customer base most of whom have been customers 10 years or more or have been referd by long time customers

I have one customer who wont let the telco , alarm peaple or anyone in the telco closet unless Im there

No my customers are telling the "carpetbaggers" to keep moving

I have no worrys of outsiders touching my base

Skip is leaving them out beouse number one is false and number two has no bearing on the discussion

(1) I have been in and out of the affected area since the storm hit and have not once been checked nor have I seen any road blocks or anyone else being checked

its a assinine statement do you have any concept of the the area we are talking about ?

do you have any idea how many peaple would have to be involved in such a check ?

the storm cut a path 50 or so miles wide by a 150 or so miles long how could they possibly limit or check peaple entering or leaving

(2) yes there is a toll free number to report price gouging but what does that have to do with what we are discussing here ?

price gouging is for peaple who rasied prices on needed supplies and services as the result of the storm it has nothing to do with repair services contracted afterword

I hope your supplier knows more about the products he is selling then the dribble you posted above

In my experience, carpetbaggers care more about being arrested than infrastructure.

we agree there they dont care a thing about the residents or infastructure only lining thir own pockets

My Rantings if you like are nothing more than observations and caring about my friends and neigbors.

I spent the last three days working in a area that was hard hit

two weeks later and there are still areas there without power , wires are still laying accross streets , some streets are still impassable .

there are distrubution centers offering free food water and ice
church groups are set up cooking meals and distrubting supplies

peaple are hurting

there is a curfew from dark to dawn

not a place for those who dont belong or have definate business there

they dont need those who would pack there things drive a 1000 miles and try to cash in .

Things are under controll , stay home take care of your own and your business's and we will take care of ours

when we need you we'll call

This is AMERICA!(The Land of Opportunity, in case we forgot). Go their if you can and want to help out, if they turn you away, wish em good luck and leave (their loss!).

One would think that if an outsider would come to the area, and find housing, that it would HELP the area by just being there. I would have to pay money for housing. Money for food. Money for materials. Taxes on the income. ETC...

If the residents wish to turn the people away and they dont get any work, then that is the chance a business person takes.

Last I checked Fidel Castro was NOT president, so if you are going to go, go. But be sure that you will be scoffed at, pretty much like the union jags scoff at the non-union guys. Since this is a free country, both sides are able to do as they please.

I've been keeping an eye on this post for a few days now.

There are "a few" valid point being brought up.

Skip555 while not apparently being particularly gifted in the area of diplomacy does have a couple "small" points.

Right now what housing there is available is desperately needed for locals affected by the storm.

Would you like to wonder where your kids would sleep because a contractor from anywhere USA took the last room for his 3 man crew ?? I know it would bother me.

With that aside, he's totally smoking waaaay too many rice crispies to think outside help isn't needed/desired

If it were me, I'd probably contact state offices or telco's in affected areas to get contact information. In other words, rather than just showing up, get invited or at least find out how to help with out crushing toes.

just my 2 cents.

Isn't it about time we let skip go on his merry way?? Let him enjoy his area and customers that are supposedly so loyal and we can get on with real issues..
