Hi all ... I've been using this site as a resource as I'm new to Nortel, and you guys and gals are geniuses, as far as I'm concerned. I'm looking forward to actually contributing!

To the issue: Anyone know the trick to using a fax machine connected to the data port on a M2008 set? I've already considered simply splitting the jack, but that would create even more of a mess in the tiny space this is connected to and now I'm curious. I want to make it work.

I don't think you will get consistent faxes all the time over anything but a plain analog TN, but you can research it like this:
The "kit" include an adapter that goes into the base of the phone, some special cords, plus a power supply.

save time hassel and $.. split the jack.. even with the kit, you'll find some machines can not manually send a fax to the data port..

Thanks for the responses. Anyone have experience with a Diamond L2s-6 hospitality phone? This is an analog set with a data port built in, and I have plenty of those laying around, too. I connected the fax machine, but no dial tone through the data port ...

If you're on the Internet, you can find that stuff :)

That's a 2-line phone, so if you want dial tone through the data jack, you'll need to install the second line

Yeah, I already have the documentation ... it was pretty clear that you can connect a fax machine to the data port, that's why I was surprised I didn't have dial tone. Didn't even think about needing the second line for the data port to work, though.

Unfortunately, this set is installed on an off-premise extension - its basically a dry pair that runs from the PBX, to the LEC CO, back to the premises - which are about 300 yards from the PBX. Stupid, I know, but the monthly fee for the circuit is much more cost effective than the construction that would be required to get cable to the new facility.

I guess I'm going with the $2 line splitter. I can't justify another circuit to enable the second line. :)

Have you ever looked at the back of the fax machine? In most cases, you plug the fax machine into the jack and plug the phone into the "phone" jack of the fax machine.

GHTROUT, if you lived in my town, I would buy you a beer AND let you smack me in the head.

Thanks for the reality check ... shame on me for not thinking of that.

In all the confusion, I couldn't remember if we did six shots or only five :)

Let's call it 6. I'll be back with more questions ... :)

Also, the diamond L2s is a 2 line phone which means your jack will need to have a second analog line wired into it. Line 1 = Blue/White or Grn Red
Line 2 = Org/White or Grn/White (T568A or B respectively) or Yellow Black

The L2s will route the second line to the data port through it's internal wiring.

(I have loads of experience with these sets -- used to run a 1000 room hotel with 2-3 dialtones per room)

Thanks, MagnaRGP, but see my response earlier. Two-lines is logistically not an option at this point.

Placing the fax directly on the line with the phone as the extension device works fine for our purposes. It's a bit tricky if a fax comes in and the phone is answered, but this will mostly be an outbound fax anyway.

Thanks all. Once again, a quick, accurate answer!
