I'm not sure if this is an Exchange issue, an Outlook issue, or a GAL issue. My apologies if this is in the wrong place.

The issue involves the Address Book in Outlook. If I look at the properties of anybody whose entry comes from the GAL, I can't edit them as a regular user. This makes perfect sense. Of course, now I have to edit them because our company address has changed.

I have administrator priviledges, but am baffled as to where to look. I've tried updating users' entries in Active Directory, but those changes don't seem to percolate through.

Besides waiting for some books to arrive, any suggestions?

You need the recipient policy in Exchange System Manager on the server. Does it in one hit.

The GAL is only updated in Outlook (in Cached mode) every 24 hours by dedault. So when you make the change you won't see it in outlook unless you do as Zelandakh states and then update the client too.

I'm assuming that you're referring to the email domain has changed. If that's the case, Zelandakh is correct in updating the Recipient Policy in ESM.

If you're referring to the physical snail mail address, then you're going to be hitting the users in ADUC. You could also use something like GALMOD to allow the users to change certain parameters themselves.

Thanks Zelandakh, Iain and Pat. Although my problem remains unsolved, your replies have helped confirm that I'm looking in the right area.

I'm sorry. I should have been more clear. Completely my fault.

Actually, it's just the snail mail address (not the email address) that needs changing. Not that that will necessarily make a difference.

I noticed that the update interval on the Default Offline Address List was set to "Update daily at 5:00 AM." The same setting is set to "Run Always" elsewhere. But it's been a couple of days and the changes I made in Active Directory haven't made any impact on the information available from Outlook that's coming from the GAL.

I'm trying to build up my base knowledge in this area, but I can't devote myself totally to this task.

Ok. I don't know exactly what happened. But the changes finally took effect. I've been looking around a lot, but haven't actually done anything that would have triggered a change. I suspect that the GAL is updated on a weekly basis, but can't yet confirm it.

I'm looking forward to learning more about this, but now I've got other fires to put out. Thanks all.

The OAB is updated on the server once a day at 5am by default (as you noticed). Outlook updates its copy once a day. So - you could see a period where you don't see any updates for well over a day.

You can typically force the OAB to rebuild manually, and then force Outlook to download the address book if needed.
