Hello,

I recently upgraded my data storage array on my home-built server: dual Opteron 244s, (2) Raptors in RAID 1 for OS, (Windows Small Business Server Premium)(3) Raptors in RAID 5 for data. This is a single server in a small office w/ 9 clients.

Included in the data array was the following MBDATA:
priv1.ebd, priv1.stm, pub1.ebd and pub1.stm. I did not relocate the log files to the RAID 5 array (L:), left them on C:. Probably not a good idea.

I ran a complete backup & verify using SyncBackSE before assembling the new array and reloading the data. I had previously used this program to recover data to a rebuilt array and it went perfectly. As an extra measure, I stopped Exchange services and drag-and-drop copied the above files to a folder on the C: drive. I also have the data from the previous successful restore stored elsewhere.

Upon recovery all files were present but Exchange was not available to clients. I was unable to manually mount the Information Store or Mailbox store, receiving error # c1041724. All pertinent Exchange services are running. I was unable to view Public Folders receiving error # c1030af3. I ran the restore several times with the same result. I tried copying the data from the backup folder on C:, same result.

The first error in the Event Log is Source ESE, event ID # 454:

"Information Store (2568)First Storage Group- Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -551"

Research on this error led to "#define JET_err Consistent time mismatch"

Other errors, in order, are 9518, 8197, 9175, 1005, it's a bloodbath in that log!

I am a relative amateur when it comes to Exchange and am here seeking a solution in simplified language. Thanks for your time.

Tony

During the restore, did you check the "Last Backup Set" checkbox? Have done 'eseutil /cc' yet? Let us know what the result of that was.

You get the 9175 and 8197 because pub and priv are not mounted. 9518 is likely going to tell you that the current log file is missing, so I would check your log path first.

During the restore, did you check the "Last Backup Set" checkbox?
No. Where would that be located?

Have done 'eseutil /cc' yet?

I tried running that from the cmd line, it is not a valid application. Sorry if I seem dense, but I have never had Exchange problems and don't know the steps needed to run eseutil. Thanks for the reply, keep 'em coming please.

I would check your log path first.

I have checked the paths of private, public and log. They are all correct.

Check and see if it applies. I don't think this is exactly what you're seeing.

This is EXACTLY what I'm seeing. I see you run eseutil from Exchsrvr\Bin directory. I will try that now. Can I simply check that box (wherever it is) and reload the data without doing it through eseutil?

What is the text in the event 9518?

Error 0xfffffdd9 starting Storage Group /DC=local/DC=LYNNS/CN=Configuration/CN=Services/CN=Microsoft Exchange/CN=LYNNS/CN=Administrative Groups/CN=first administrative group/CN=Servers/CN=LYNNS2/CN=InformationStore/CN=First Storage Group on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store.
Storage Group - Initialization of Jet failed.

NOTE: "LYNNS" is our domain name. Lynns2 is the machine name

Can someone please post the steps to run ESEUTIL?

I'd test the logs first.

One other question: The edb.chk file resides in the directory specified by the "working directory" value in HKLM\CCS\Services\MSExchangeISSystem\Parameters. THis is initally set based on the parameter msExchDataPath. Typically, this is the first database drive. Did you copy over the edb.chk file as well? Did you leave it, and does it still reside in the working directory?

What you are attempting is a roll forward restore. Assuming your logs are consistent and contiguous, the process is to delete the edb.chk file and then start the IS. Try moving or renaming the edb.chk and starting your IS

Apparently I made a mistake in the backup procedure and did not backup Exchange with the correct routine. I backed up & restored the private & public files with backup software and not Exchange Backup.

Why this worked before and not now I do not know, but I do know that I have now reached the limits of my knowledge, and have called in professional help.

I will have to document every change the tech makes in my server log so I will post back with his/her conclusions and remedies.

I appreciate everyone's taking the time to research and respond.

Tony

Took the tech about 15 minutes to solve the problem. He removed the logfiles from C:\Exchsrvr, ran eseutil /p then remounted the databases. That's it. $179. At least I am supporting the professional IT community!

Thanks all for your attempts to help, I have learned a great deal from this event.
