After installing an update (4131) to Mcafee 4.0.2 I run into trouble with MCSCAN32.DLL a McAfee DLL. I tried to put a message on their 'forum' but bombed out. I then sent the info to the forum admin email address. The error messages are from OE and Netscape:

I had to turn Virus Scan off in order to use those programs. Can you tell me where I can get a good copy of MCSCAN32.DLL, my appears to have been dinged. Thanks

Phénix -- you're a genius & a God-send !! Installing DAT 4157 from the link you supplied did the trick -- the Dr. SOlomon works great, the virus-scan of my entire Harddrive works great (which it could not execute before), and the auto-updates features work also. I DID have to install the DAT file in Safe Mode initially, and remove the McAfee Personal Firewall in Safe Mode as well for everything to work, but THAT DID IT !! Thanks all,

I downloaded the new 4161dat.exe from McAfee and afterwards, it was just a big mess. At first, Netscape crashed with a msg about mcscan32.dll (IE5 aldo did initially), then I had to re-install AOL6. Finally, I had to disable the scan.exe in the Autoexec.bat file in order to load Windows98.

I could not find e-mail address to McAfee to sumbit my problem to them before finding this forum.

As today, I noted that the site mentioned by Phénix (Visitor) <ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/4.x>, featuring an S4161dat.exe file

Reading from the discussions, I figured that I had to delete the current Vshield program to install this one.

I am also wondering whether the Sdat.exe would ask the codes etc for the installation after deleting the previous engine or something about it?

Any suggestion in doing it right are appreciated.

Last, to be on the safe side, any way to verify the authenticity of the SDAT file?

Sorry McAfee does not have an email address just for support, only for problems you experience on their website.

The original discussion I had on Virtual Doctor has some links. That url is
The above link to virtualdr must be cut and pasted to work correctly.

Also there's McAfee's 'help' site LOL

I'm quoting from one of the respondents to the thread at Virtual Doctor which I think is significant.

Philo,
Consider this ... why would you use a 23Meg pig to do a job that a 3 megger can ? A 3 meg program without pages and pages of d/l problems.

That thought and "power user" are a mutually exclusive set.

InnoculatIT makes a lot of sense to me...as well as many others. PC-cillin is also an excellent choice.

A trip through the archives will show that many of us, were McAfee cheerleaders...at one time.

But McAfee keeps making the same mistakes over and over. Brad and the guys at the forums are good guys and really try...but they are agonizingly slow at admitting bugs in their products.

The McAfee site has undergone what, 6 significant format changes in 9 months. The direction is clear...paid support.

Don't worry, you won't find that link I gave you in VirusScan 4.0 support, it is not linked from there any longer. I found it using an old link. I would print it out, if you think you may ever want to use it.

McAfee is becoming the AOL of anti viral, I can't wait to see how their influence on ZA turns out.

I think you're better off right now switching to something else. You'll be money and time ahead. s-) PhiloVance

This business with mcscan32.dll was very poorly handled by McAfee. I was siting there with Antivirus 4.02 and I downloaded DAT 4159 to keep Nimba Away. Every time I started OutLook Express I got an mcsan32.dll page fault. I receive a very large amount of email and I need my virus protection program to work. Rather than tell me I needed McAfee 5.21 to use DAT 4159 McAfee just crashed my system. I upgraded to 5.21 to stop the crash but I feel I was blackmailed to buy 5.21. How about a warning McAfee? If 4.02 didn't support 4159 then the download should have failed. This tactic leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. 5.21 seems like a decent product and I'm at DAT 4162 now... wow three upgrades in four days... but I recommend computer security software to a lot of folks. I think maybe I'll recommend Norton Antivirus in the future and not mention the company that sends me pop-up ads on their screens and blackmails me. John Henry... still angry

I had Virusshield more or less disabled from my computer, and would only run the virusscan (all files) on occasion, after downloading the new dat files as they came. I am able to run the scan in only "program" files mode, but in "all" files mode, I get the scan32 caused invalid pagefault in module mcscan32.dll error message after scanning about 400 or so files. I did contact a "tek" at Mcafee last night, and after explaining my problem, (without asking what windows 9x product I have) he sent me the folloing solution:

Open Outlook
Go to tools
go to options
go to other tab
go to advanced options
go to add in manager
take the check off "exchange scan"

I dont have "outlook" but I do have outlook express, and couldnt find any thing resembling the "solution" after opening tools. I did reply to this e-mail indicating that this "solution" didnt work, but have not gotten a reply back......maybe I will have to look at PC-cillin.

There are two mirrors of ftp.nai.com for european users which changed my download speed from 1.2KB/s to 75KB/s

ftpeur.nai.com
ftpde.nai.com

Hope that helps.

How about this one.
I have had several set just plain bomb out on McAfee. When attempting to load the 4159 or 4160 or 4161 updates I got an error about invalid version. After removing Mcafee altogether via add/remove and via manually making sure all entries were gone from the registry, I attempt a clean reinstall. I now get Internal error 2889 "License agreement". What is this?!!!

At the risk of repeating myself, there are several FREE AV products out there.

My advice to Randusolei is to cut and run. I suppose there are some who like it, but myself, I'm through with it.

hi philovance,
i suffered exactly from the same mcscan32.dll problem, also the german version is "infected" by this issue. so i decided to switch to another av software vendor.
unfortunately, this grisoft.com avg av software that you recommend is available in the us only (what regards the FREE version).
do you have any other names of av software producers that have similar high quality and free software for poor students like i am? or is avg available from somewhere else as i think they check where the request for free downloads come from.
i appreciate your help,
markus

McAfee caused havoc on my computer. As I don't know how to identify problems well myself I hired people to help. I now have Norton antivirus, the Cleaner (trojan finder) and BlackIce Defender (firewall) and all is working well. I wrote McAfee and never had a response and no advisory was sent out to people either. Not good considering how many people have had major problems.

I got this message when I tried to scan my computer for viruses.. And it made me close it.. So it didn't scan at all..

Could you tell me what I can do to fix it?

There are some suggestions above in this same thread. The consensus seems to be to download and install the current superdat file whatever that may be (the name changes week to week). You might try this webpage:

and then post back what happened.

PhiloVance:

First of all, thanks very much for this forum. I am running 4.0.3, and had happily installed the 4150dat files. After installing 4160dat (nimda terror) my IExplorer choked with the aforementioned (many times) MCSCAN32.DLL page fault. Your forum and the experiences of your contributors were of great help!!!!

However ......

I went to the NAI page ( selected 'Anti-Virus Updates' and found a reasonably clear presentation of the findings of the forum.

Certainly NAI could improve on their tech-support (who couldn't) and certainly they could make the web-page a little clearer; but IMHO your criticism is a little harsh (Sept 21, Sept 25)

The average user (most of the people on the internet) cannot identify the cause of their computer problems and have to hire (pay) people to come over and identify the problem and do the fix. If an advisory had been sent out that McAfee was having problems, it would have saved me over $100 in labour alone and I would have stayed with McAfee. I realize that all software has problems and no one wants to advertise (by newsletter) that there may be some problems with that week's virus program but a lot of people have virus software and for the average person who only knows that their computer is acting like a 286, it would have been helpful to have the information.

I've been having severe performance problems ever since I upgraded to McAfee version 5 in mid September. If I open a file in my HTML folder it takes 8 seconds with McAfee VScan enabled and 1 second with it disabled. If I open a Publisher file of a large newsletter it takes 50 seconds with VScan enabled and 8 seconds with it disabled. All my software is very, very slow with VScan enabled. The problem is the same regardless of which version of Windows, MSIE, which engine I use (4.1.40 or 4.1.50) and is the same for Dats 4160 to 4165. I am using the default settings in VScan that came with the product. Daniel Wolff of Network Associates wrote me and asked some specifics and made some suggestions. He said the current Dats are very different and he was looking into the problem. He finally told me to turn off scanning on outbound files (which is an option on Netshield for Windows 2000 - I have Windows ME) and that was the last I ever heard from him a week ago. This product from McAfee and this service are the worse I have ever encountered. I have worked in the computer business since 1959 beginning with IBM. McAfee is committing suicide with their product and their support. I can probably make VSCAN work by limiting the file types that are scanned but the point is what about the thousands of folks that don't know what file types mean or need scanning. They can't do that. John B....
