On Tuesday the BCM shutdown several times due to a bad UPS system. Now when I start the BCM I get this error:

"windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \winnt\system32\config\systemhardware profile\last known good menu"

Anythoughts on repair?

sounds like the harddrive is corrupt. may need to look at replacement

How would I get a replacement for the BCM1000. I don't have any of the original disks.

How do I reinstall nt4.0 on the bcm? Can I attach a cddrive to the bcm or what.

You need to use the BCM BIT Tool. What software level was the customer at (ie: 3.0, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, etc)..

Using the BIT tool will put the hard drive at default. There is no way to load Embedded NT4.0 onto a drive and expect this to work.

Software ver 3.6

What would loading this software do?

Also, would using a nt boot disk and running rdisk to restore the registry work or would it be worth a try?

you don't load the software. You attach a CDRom drive to the BCM (via the second IDE port), put in the BIT Tool, you will get a BIT ID Number (not exact on true name), go to Nortel KRS and use the BIT Generator tool to generate a unique number, pop it in at the correct prompt on the BCM, load the software you are trying to image too, and let GHOST do its thing..

Would this over right all the data, vm's, trees, etc?

Yes it would. And unfortunately, Nortel ITAS wouldn't be able to do anything to help get that file.

Backups are wonderful..

And if you do get the BCM Imaging Tool (BIT), make sure you set the date to 01/01/08 before you perform the Platform Initialization. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to get to the BCM Web Page once it's done..

Based on the facts above, what would you do? Try and repair this box, or upgrade to the bcm50.

Do u have another 3.6 HD available? If so swap it out. make sure u initialize the HD and follow everything listed in the manual regarding HD replacement.

For u to upgrade to a 50, it would depend on what u currently have on the 1000 and would it be able to handle everything.

There is another way to fix this problem..

First of all connect the hard drive as a slave to another windows PC I recommend windows nt or 2000

run check disk on the drive with the /F option once that has completed try the drive in the BCM again

If you still get the same error the registry is corrupt, it can be fixed using a tool called Registry Reanimator available here...

If you still have problems the last option it to use a tool like HDD Regenerator or Spinrite

Good Luck

Thanks I will give TLDuk's options a try. I think it should be fixable, I'm an old NT guy, but trying to remember is tough.

I have a quote for $5000 for the BCM 50 with all the new seats and licenses, but I would like not to spend the money right now.

What about puchasing a 3.6 replacment harddrive, then restore from backup to the new drive? Would this work?

If you can get your hands on 3.6 drive you would be able to restore from a backup that you have. If your existing 3.6 has patches on it you need to patch the new drive first before you do a restore.

I cannot remember what patches I had on the old drive.

One more, if I get a new drive and restore the backup, does the backup contain the keycodes or would I need the keycodes after installing the backup, cause I cannot find the keycodes.

Any Nortel supplier or a friendly forum member can retrieve the keycodes from Nortel if you provide the sys ID
