Embedded direct ext dialing

I have seen versions of this all over the forum.... customer has 200 series extensions but wants to use the "2" for something other than "if you know your party's extension, you may dial it"

Can't I use * and have Dial-By Number action. Then make a transfer - Properties - Specific tab - Enter $KEY as the Destination.

Then in the AA prompt I just say, "if you know your party's extension, dial * then the extension number.

A little cumbersome but it should work, yes?

Are you using embedded vm or vm pro? You mention embedded, but then mention $KEY which is a vm pro optiion only.

If vm pro, put 2??, transfer to $ KEY. If embedded, you can have * go to dial by number, but I don't believe there is a prompt after you press *, so you'd have to say 'if you know your extention, dial * plus the extension number'.

 
Yes, doing Embedded and yes getting my vm pro and embedded crossed.

So, * with a Dial-By-Number and then tell them to dial * plus the extension.

Or you could create another Auto Attendant/Menu labeled 'Company Directory', set * to "Transfer to Auto Attendant", which you would set to go to the 'Company Directory' AA/Menu. This would allow you to create a seperate recording for the new menu, 'if you know your parties ext you may dial it at any time, otherwise please listen to a complete list of our company directoy" (or something like that). The only reason I mention this is because I have had previous issues with customers complaining that their callers get confused having to press * and then immediately dialing the ext number. If you break it up into sections (seperated by recordings) and don't make it too cumbersome, the caller gets less confused.

Sometimes we have to cater to the special needs of people...ha ha.

I forgot to mention:

In the 'Company Directory' menu you would then be able to set action 2 to Dial-by-Number. Just stating the obvious.
