We are removing a Nortel BCM but the customer wants to reuse all (88) of their existing T and M series phones. I understand the DS30 connects 16 phones on the first amphenol and 14 on the second. What I don't know is if the BCM uses all 25 pairs. It sounds to me that it will not be as simple as just moving the cable off the BCM onto the IP Office without doing cross-connect work on the existing Nortel 66 blocks. Can anyone confirm?

There are no amphenol connectors on the DS30. You will need to make them. Get appropriate gender 25 pair cables, strip and terminate each pair to RJ12 then connect to matching ports on the DS30 and you'll be fine. You are making a coupler that breaks out to RJ12 plugs. The Nortel BCM DSM16+ uses 16 pairs per module.

^The DS30A has RJ21 connectors on the front...

DSM 16 and DSM 32 modules in a BCM use the first 16 pairs on the amphenol cables. It's a pretty easy swap to DS-16A or 30A modules from a BCM, except for the last two phones on the DSM-32 module. If you make the extensions on the IPO modules match the extensions on the BCM, then cutover night is easy.

Going from BCM 50 to IPO requires a bit of reterminating on the blocks as the BCM 50 main cabinet has an odd layout where digital phones start on pair 25 and work backwards, and analog stations, trunks, MOH and paging start on pair 1 and work their way up.

When Avaya took over Nortel SMB products, as a major Nortel dealer we though the route to go was to upgrade them to the IPO and one of the main reason was that the customers wanted to keep their existing Nortel sets.We did many conversions from CICS,MICS and BCM's to IPO and i cannot say it was a huge success. After the migration you have the same set on your desk but the way to use it is quite different then what they use to do for the last 15-20 years they had their system. The major complaints from the customer's i heard was the voicemail not being as good as the Call Pilot, not as user friendly.I know Avaya did some progress to make the IPO as close as possible as the BCM but let's be honest here, they were never able to make a stable system. How can a serious company release updates/patches that fixes bugs but create others or bring back old bugs...
There is other solutions out there for customer's that want to keep their Nortel sets.

We decided to go to another manufacturer for the SMB market and are really happy with, no more bugs,no more fees to upgrade and no maintenance contract with the manufacturer to support their product. At the end the customer is happy and so i am.

Just my two cents.

You can say who you chose. A lot of us are evaluating other manufacturers.

Id love to know as well as we have been looking at other products (Panasonic most recently).

Panasonic is the manufacturer we chose for SMB and Mitel and Cisco for bigger sites like Hotels,Call Centers,Cloud deployment etc.
We used to sell Panasonic in the 1990's but went to Nortel when our company was bought by a large Nortel Dealer.
Now that Nortel is history and Avaya is trying to sell what i could call a key system(forgive me IPO lovers) as a large PBX with
maintenance contract, service agreement that the SMB customers are not ready to pay for then we decide to come back to
Panasonic and we don't regret it.Their systems have evolved a lot since the old 308,616,1232.Lot of features, fantastic wireless
solution and a good third app partner(Poltys).
What else can i ask for? Nothing! No more bugs, you know what i mean...

Mitel was designed for hospitality industry. No brainer. The IPO is a terrible key system. Only thing about Panasonic is the flimsiness of their phones. NEC is my choice for SMB.

Not to argue with you about flimsiness of the Panasonic sets, but i can't recall the last time i replaced one and i install a lot.

hello gberger
I am telling our sales people that all the time that selling an IPO to Nortel used customers without new phones is a crapshoot. Customers using the same phone for 25 years (because the phones just don't die :)) are not happy. Small little details like the fact that you don't get the message "On the phone" is driving people insane. Not because they really need it but because they had it before and nothing changed for them (same old crappy everlasting phone)
The human psyche is our worst enemy in this case.
We also sell NEC for customers that just can't get rid of their line appearance wishes (or for really small installs with only a few phones) but programming them is a nightmare, I had an introduction to it and never touched them again because some options require you to program to separate programming options to make them work. But I guess you get used to everything if you do it long enough, I got used to the IPO :)

GBerger - the buttons often start to stick really bad after a while. I absolutely hate the green displays. Plus you are limited to what features you can assign to buttons. You cannot have all the DSS buttons you want for example. And the "one touch" buttons are severely limited.

Westi- Well said, those upgrades with existing Nortel sets specially the "M" serie were not great...!

pmcook- Are you sure you are talking about Panasonic sets? Sticky buttons used to be an issue 10 years ago and i didnt see the green display's you are talking about since at least 15 years so i guess you should keep up-to-date on products you like to discuss.
I understand we all have our preferred systems and that's ok with me.
