Hi,
My first post here, I think - or first in a while anyways.

The company I work for has an old Nortel Meridian PBX and I'm looking into a VOIP phone system, most likely hosted. One of the issues is our main entry door. We have a buzzer with a speaker & mic at the door and use a door open controller on an extension to release the plate and allow entry.

I'm looking for alternatives to having an open door so anyone could just walk in. We need some sort of buzzer system, and the pbx-based system worked well because the door could be answered from the phone. Has anyone heard of something similar, or workable alternatives?

Thanks,

Mike Trout

THanks, CWC3.

Our current system is like the 1819 unit at doorking.com. My same concern applies. If I remove the switch, how will it work since there's no switch to route the call? I'm hoping not to have to pay a monthly "yet another phone" charge.

Mike Trout.

what you need is a ata and a kalika door phone it is what we use on our hosted voip platform we do a passive licence for this that is a one off fee

Hostedvoipman, thanks for the reply.

What is an ATA? I'm not really a phone person so ata to me is a computer device interface (i.e. S-ATA) or a small regional subsidiary of American Airlines... ;)

So your platform can have a line that stays internal? Is that what you mean by a passive license?

Thanks,

Mike Trout.

ATA = Analog Telephone Adaptor

Most VOIP systems have some analog capability. It is likely that the unit you have can be attached without too much effort.

Just make sure you identify the need for an analog cct.

Sorry, I just re-read your original post. If you are thinking about hosted VOIP you will probably need to install a dedicated trunk for the door box. The door box would then dial a phone number on your VOIP system and function from there.

There are actual ip based door phone/door controllers
google it.....!

you can conect a sip based door phone but usally it is allot cheaper to use a analog trminal adapter then a norman analog door phone

I put one of these in running through an NBX100 VoIP system. went back to the system through a 4 port analogue card we had in the NBX. Just ask your hosting company to provide you with an analogue port (also think about it for fax & alarm requirements)

umm,it IS supposed to do that, right??

Thanks everyone for your input. I haven't decided what to do yet, but I know it can be done. That's the important part.

Mike.
