I wanted to add my own personal experience while attempting to use a Valcom bullhorn speaker with an IPO page group. I have seen this same topic mentioned several times on this board with many offered suggestions that I attempted. This configuration is going into a prvate school. They already have an ALL PAGE group, which alerts the campus thru the phoneset. They wanted to put a loud speaker in the gym, so that alerts could be heard throughout the day. We had hoped that it would be nothing more than installing the Valcom equipment, and adding it into the group. In our case, nothing ever worked.
Basic setup: Avaya station port -> Valcom V9970 -> Valcom bullhorn speaker
This was the original configuration that we tried. To answer all your questions, yes, yes, yes, yes...
1. YES to trying a 600 ohm resistor across T&R.
2. YES to trying a WMT1A.
3. YES to not knowing which side of the V9970 the resistor or WMT1A was supposed to be on, so YES to trying them on both sides under each programmable circumstance.
4. YES to selecting every possible option under the sun in the USER>ANALOGUE tab, and YES to resetting the system after changing the options (standard telephone, paging speaker, IVR, fax, etc.)
5. YES to replacing the Valcom V9970 with a UPAM (more on that in a minute).
6. YES to being certain that the speaker is working. I placed a tone across the leads, and heard it loud & clear.
7. YES to trying every possible combination of programming and physical setting.
The closest that we ever got: We assigned Extn 530 to the speaker, and we built a hunt group 299 just for that extension. (We built its own hg for the meantime b/c we didn't want to add the speaker to the working ALL PAGE group and constantly disturb the campus). I added DialPage 530, DialPage 299, GroupPage 530, GroupPage 299 to programmable buttons on a 1416 set (for testing). None of these buttons ever activated the speaker; and depending on the Analogue option selected, I would either read "CALL REJECTED" or "BUSY" on the display. HOWEVER if i just dialed the extension ... 5-3-0 or 2-9-9 ... the stupid thing worked! I could activate the speaker, and hear my voice over it loud & clear. Also, I could program "DialExtn 530", and it would work. But never with DialPage or GroupPage.
So we replaced out the V9970 with a Bogen LU UPAM kit. Same thing. And I am certain that the speaker still works b/c I put my test set on the Tip & Ring leads on the UPAM, went off hook, and I was able to activate & speak thru the horn. This was a technique suggested in the Troubleshooting section of the Bogen manual.
If I understood the operational or mechanical differences between page dialing (DialPage, GroupPage) and extension dialing (Dial Extn, dialing extension directly)), maybe I could resolve this matter.
