I wanted to add my own personal experience while attempting to use a Valcom bullhorn speaker with an IPO page group. I have seen this same topic mentioned several times on this board with many offered suggestions that I attempted. This configuration is going into a prvate school. They already have an ALL PAGE group, which alerts the campus thru the phoneset. They wanted to put a loud speaker in the gym, so that alerts could be heard throughout the day. We had hoped that it would be nothing more than installing the Valcom equipment, and adding it into the group. In our case, nothing ever worked.

Basic setup: Avaya station port -> Valcom V9970 -> Valcom bullhorn speaker

This was the original configuration that we tried. To answer all your questions, yes, yes, yes, yes...

1. YES to trying a 600 ohm resistor across T&R.
2. YES to trying a WMT1A.
3. YES to not knowing which side of the V9970 the resistor or WMT1A was supposed to be on, so YES to trying them on both sides under each programmable circumstance.
4. YES to selecting every possible option under the sun in the USER>ANALOGUE tab, and YES to resetting the system after changing the options (standard telephone, paging speaker, IVR, fax, etc.)
5. YES to replacing the Valcom V9970 with a UPAM (more on that in a minute).
6. YES to being certain that the speaker is working. I placed a tone across the leads, and heard it loud & clear.
7. YES to trying every possible combination of programming and physical setting.

The closest that we ever got: We assigned Extn 530 to the speaker, and we built a hunt group 299 just for that extension. (We built its own hg for the meantime b/c we didn't want to add the speaker to the working ALL PAGE group and constantly disturb the campus). I added DialPage 530, DialPage 299, GroupPage 530, GroupPage 299 to programmable buttons on a 1416 set (for testing). None of these buttons ever activated the speaker; and depending on the Analogue option selected, I would either read "CALL REJECTED" or "BUSY" on the display. HOWEVER if i just dialed the extension ... 5-3-0 or 2-9-9 ... the stupid thing worked! I could activate the speaker, and hear my voice over it loud & clear. Also, I could program "DialExtn 530", and it would work. But never with DialPage or GroupPage.

So we replaced out the V9970 with a Bogen LU UPAM kit. Same thing. And I am certain that the speaker still works b/c I put my test set on the Tip & Ring leads on the UPAM, went off hook, and I was able to activate & speak thru the horn. This was a technique suggested in the Troubleshooting section of the Bogen manual.

If I understood the operational or mechanical differences between page dialing (DialPage, GroupPage) and extension dialing (Dial Extn, dialing extension directly)), maybe I could resolve this matter.

The funny thing is that we have NEVER had an issue making external page work on IPO. Never. Configure the analog station port as page port, connect equipment, configure user for paging, add user to hunt group with others, make shortcode to page the group, save config with power cycle with load across tip/ring of analog station port. Every time like clockwork... Unless you need some other function, the V9970 is unnecessary. We ALWAYS use a matching transformer (Valcom or Bogen, doesn't matter).

mforrence, can you expand on your process for placing a load across the tip and ring during the power cycle. If I am using a WMT1A, would this be the 600-ohm load across the two screw terminals??? Your post also raised a few other questions: is the shortcode to page the group necessary? When you wrote "Configure user for paging", i assume you meant programming a button for DialPage?? By matching transformer, you do mean the WMT1a, right???

1. I still put my butt set across tip & ring and take it off-hook before power cycling IPO. This has worked for me since 2002, so that's what we do.
2. You need to make a user that has same extension as physical port that you've used. Put that user into a hunt group, along with any other users that you'd like to have hear the page. Short code to page the hunt group.
3. Matching transformer - Bogen WMT1A or any similar device.

There may be other variations that also function. This is what we've done for years and have always had success. So we don't mess with it.

!UPDATE! Mforrence's suggestions worked, and many thanks. The load provided by the butt set during the reboot is an essential step in the procedure. Because of the frequency of this topic on this board, I will post my steps and measures: (to configure paging to an overhead speaker on a station port)

mforrence was right; you do not need anything more than a WMT1a in-between the speaker and the phone port. We used a Valcom V-1030C model for the overhead speaker. Actually we did have a 66-block in-between the phone system and the speaker which made wiring to the WMT1a easier.

[Avaya IpO]-->[66 block]-->[WMT1a]-->[66 block]-->{Valcom V1030]

On the Avaya side, connect the Tip & Ring to the outside screw terminal (600 ohm). On the speaker side, you will need to adapt the phone plug. I cut thru the external sheathing. This exposed stranded fibers and a secondary internal sheathing. I twisted the fibers into a single strand; and then, i twisted this strand with the Ring; i would have dolphin clipped it if i had any. Now I cut through the second internal sheathing, which exposed another set of stranded fibers, which I twisted together; and then, twisted onto the Tip going to the speaker. I configured the IpO like mforrence recommended with the only difference being: mforrence used short codes to access the speaker; we are using the DialPage feature. i put my butt set on the speaker-side of the 66 block, and went offhook. We power cycled the IpO, and it works.

if he helped you then show him some pink for the help

if you are trying to say "give him a star", then I would just say "give him a star". Asking me to show him some pink is a kinda weird.

no it's not weird in case you didn't know the stars are pink, just saying
