DFS Site Awareness Problem

Hi.

The latest piece of fun I'm having with DFS is that site awareness has gone completely out the window. I see on another website that this is symptomatic of clients not being able to see a local root replica in their own site, but have no idea why this should be - the replica is most definitely there and available. The only funny thing on my network I can think of that could be contributing to this is that we use a 22 bit netmask. Any ideas anybody?

Cheers,

mh

Got it!!!

Steve - On your DNS server(s), go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters and look for LocalNetPriority and RoundRobin.

I'll bet they're not there...

If a sunet is not assigned to a site, a 5778 is logged. The subnet is then assumed to be in the default first site. A computer on such a subnet will never be site aware, it will always use the default first site. Try creating subnet objects for the subnets listed in the 5778s and assign them to the appropriate sites.

I don't have any 5778s. All subnets are set to sites, nothing is missing.

MH,

I loooked at the articles you posted and at the registry location. It looks like Round Robin is controlled by the RoundRobin registry entry, This is also controlled through the DNS console using Actions/Properties/Advanced. I turned off Round Robin with no success. Would it help if I added the reg entry to turn off Round Robin for a specific DNS Resource Record. If so, what resource record is the DFS using for its Referral?

How about you, is yours working OK now?

Steve

MH,

I just re-read your last post. I am missing an entry for LocalNetPriority. Let me add that and see if it makes the difference. What should the value be, 0 or 1?

It's strange, these values don't even appear in the 2003 servers that I have at my remote sites, I'm using 2000 locally.

Steve

Yes, I can access it using UNC but...
If I go to \\DFS\LINK I get the wrong referral. If I go to \\SERVER\SHARE I bypass DFS but can still get there.

What is the wrong referral?

Hi vbrocks,

Wrong referral means that even though I have a valid DFS destination on my local subnet (which is connected to the local site in Sites and Services) I have a referral to another site and I get redirected there. I know this because it runs slower and if I look at the properies of the drive that I am going to, under the DFS tab it tells me I have been referred elsewhere. I can manualy set the local DFS server to active but it doesn't do any good. When I rebeoot it refers to another site again.

What is the ip address of the server with the replica? (local)
What is the ip address of the other server that is referred to? (other site)
What are the subnets for both sites?

Did you previously setup the replica computer at the old site?

Another place to check is Folder redirection in your GPOs.

Did you previously setup the replica computer at the old site?

I meant to say ...

Did you previously setup the replica computer (local) at the other site?

vbrocks,

The local network is 10.10.0.0 255.255.255.0

The other sites are 10.10.x.0/24

My local file (DFS) server is at 10.10.0.7. I get referred to any of the others, and sometimes my own if I am lucky. They are at 10.10.10.5, 10.10.20.5, 10.10.30.5, 10.10.40.5, 10.10.110.5.

The replicas have the links to the other servers as well as a handfull of other files and folders that get replicated for local access (of course local access only occurs if it's working OK). The other stuff is minimal, mostly company forms, extension lists, virus removal tools, etc. Probably no more that 500 MB.

I did this so that everyone would see a unified file structure. When they go to S: (DFS root) drive then they choose a folder which is a DFS link to their own or another location.

No, replica has always been here. I guess technically it's not a replica because it's the original where the files are put, also the first one on the network as they were deployed. I have the replication as hub and spoke. But then again as soon as others are added any one can be the orignal or a replica.... It was the first site where this whole file structure was started. I'm not sure if the other sites have this problem. I don't think so, but I have not had time to get into their LANs and check it out. I thought it was only here, but now I am second guessing myself.

You should not use a network ID of 10.10.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 because the last octet of an ID should not be all zeroes or all ones .....

The same goes for a host ID using a conventional subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 .

Please explain further. I was not aware. I have often received equipment that the default ip address was on 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0. That is last octet of net ID all 0s.

I have also set up my test network as 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0. On that network 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 is my router, 192.168.0.5 is a DC, 192.168.0.6 is Exchange, etc.

Is this not OK?

It is ok if you are using CIDR. If you are using conventional subnet masks and classes it is not ok.
Are you using classless conventions?

The fact that you have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a
network ID of 10.10.0, to me is a no no...

IP version 6.0 = CIDR = Classless = OK
IP version 4.0 = conventional = class based = NO NO

I have CIDR and the same prob, so I don't think that's particularly relevant.

In answer to the registry entry questions, LocalNetPriority and RoundRobin should both be DWORDS with a value of 1. It's possible (probable even) that they are selected in the DNS admin console but the registry entries aren't there. If you unselect them in the console, Apply, then reselect them the registry entries will appear. You'll probly have to restart your DNS service after that, as well. Seems to have solved things on my network... (famous last words)
