Our sales forces have a customer who has a ancient Enterprise edge 1000. It runs 2.5 s/w. The sales department is recommending dumping the BCM for a new 4.0. They want to know what version or vintage the MBM's are, so they can save the customer money by re-using cards. I am of the belief that you have to actually take the cards out of the BCM to determine this, but I am not sure. Is there another way to accomplish this?

IMHO ... its a moot point.
The only MBM I can think of off the top of my head that has not been reworked, enhanced, or re-released is the FEM.
Do you really want to take those old MBM's and install them on a new 4.0 BCM 400?
I'd say you're asking for service calls.

But, you are correct.
You would need to remove the card and check the product label to determine the vintage/version of the MBM.

Good Luck!
