I have a user on my Exchange 2000 network that has a major delay when open mail in the inbox. No other user has this issue. The system is a 1.8Ghz processor with 512MB RAM. Plenty of horsepower. There is not an antivirus SW that is scanning the mail, so I don't know what would cause this to just start happening. User has all the latest MS Windows and MS Office patches. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Is the client configured to use Word as email editor. If so you might change to HTML or Rich Text to help identify where the problem is originating.

This doesn't happen when trying to start a new message. It happens when opening a message that is sitting in the Inbox.

Have you tried accessing the mailbox from another pc and is user on 10/100 mb network?

We had that happen here and it was on XP SP2 with the firewall turned on. Once the firewall was turned off it went away.
