OK, who remembers that Taxi episode?

Anyway, the question is put out there....
Is there any state or city in a state where the residents are called name-ites? Like Delawarites, Idahoites...
Theres gotta be one....

While we're at it, a while ago I heard that people from California are called "Californicators".

I, too, am really glad you started this one. But did you notice no one answered your question about the Taxi episode!

...and as a recovering "Californian", I should probably point out that people from Maine are "Maine-iacs" and people from Paris are "Paris-ites".

Twenty-four years ago (when my eldest daughter was 6), she brought a new friend to the house who had recently immigrated from Isreal, Kristie introduced Iris as being an "Israelite".

Dave: I'm a recovering Californian as well. Was born and raised there (with a year or so in Texas). I left when I joined the military at 21 and have no desire to move back. I'm in central Virginia now, south of Richmond.

My ex-wife is from Michigan. She insists they she was a Michigander, not a Michiganian or Michiganite.

A suburb of New Orleans is Chalmette, Louisiana (where the Battle of New Orleans was fought on Jan. 8, 1815). They call themselves, (kiddingly) "Chalmatians" (rhymes with the spotted dog).

Next to Chalmette is a town called Violet, and a freind of mine from there says she's a "Violation".

Me transmitte sursum, Caledoni!

SantaMufasa:

I tend to think in terms of "Israeli" when the context is post-1948 Israel, and "Israelite" in Biblical contexts.

The Netherlands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and thus Germans, loosely speaking. They went their own way and were formally recognised as separate by the Peace of Westphalia. Dutch was used losely for the whole group, and I think the practice stuck in the USA.

Someone living in Holland would probably be called an Hollander, if the usage was common in Britain.

Regarding California, I've heard that neighbouring states put up signs saying Don't Californicate Us.

As for the whole USA, you could be Usians. The name Americans got applied before your War of Independence and stuck because other English-speakers in North America were counted as Canadians.

I just read last night in one of Richard Lederer's books that one of his students thought residents of Moscow were Mosquitoes.

A stinging rebuke! Those always bug me!

But, then I retreat to the comfort of Psalm 23, and its mention of still waters, and what does that lead us to?

More #@*&^ mosquitoes!

AARRRGH!

Here, residents of K-Mart are known as [blue]Blue-lites[/blue], although similar aliens are known as K-Martians.

Not for a moment! I didn't survive 49 years by being stupid.

What do you call someone who lives in Flanders and speaks Flemish?

Someone who lives on Long Island is a Long Islander?

What do you call someone living in the Falklands?

Ceylonese? Uzbeckistani? Hong Konger?

Yes, Long Islander, what's the problem?

Falklands - Falklander, I would guess.

Uzbekistan - Uzbek, although it's more an ethnicity name, than a residential name.
