a friend of mine has a PC that is going through severe overheating. Last night while her daughter was on, she noticed a burning smell and that the fan wasnt on. They then turned the computer off. Today, We bought some duster and cleaned everything on the inside because a lot of dust had accumulated. The fan was taken off the cpu and we turned the machine on for a few seconds. After maybe 10 seconds we smelled burning again, I touched the cpu and it burned my finger! I dont think this is normal. Her daughter uses kazaa a lot and im thinking maybe she got a virus somewhere that switched up the bios or something. Is there anything we can do to solve this? I know this is almost the same as the post below but I still think its a little different.

Please tell us you re-attached a working fan b-4 turning the comp.back on.I would just replace the HSF instead of relying on one that froze once.

Unfortunately by running the computer without the CPU heatsink/fan unit atteched "even for just 10 seconds" means you have almost definately burn out you processor.
Sorry mate! but the small raised area of the CPU called the core heats up instantaneously, thats why it has to have that great lump of metal (heatsink) attached to it to disipate the heat it produces.
I imagine your first problem was your power supply fan seizing up leading to the initial smell, that abviously needs freeing off or the power supply changing but obviously you now also need a new CPU.
