I just got a new AMD K-6 2 @ 500 MHZ processor and installed it in my Socket-7 type Mobo. When i turn the computer on, it shows the Video card info, then "Award Modular Bios v4.51PG" then "-MMX CPU at 16MHZ" then it checks my memory then resets and does it all over again in an endless loop. At the bottom of the screen it displays an identification string for either the Mobo or the Bios (i think it's the mobo but im not sure) that looks like this: *somedate*-VXPro+-USB-Ultr-2ASLDH09C-00. I ran a google search on the exact string and it didn't turn up anything. Then i cut out the numbers at the end and got a bunch of stuff in forums that don't really help me. The core voltage for both my new and old CPU's is 3.3v but the other v is different, something like 2.2 and 2.9v. I might have to change a jumper or something on the mobo but for all i know the dog ate the documentation. There's no kind of identifier on the board itself either, but im really sure that when i had the docs they said it supported MMX.

Any suggestions on what i should do would be appreciated.

Thanx.

i messed up the 5 and S.

Better google results now, but any suggestions would still be appreciated.

Hello MasterPi,
What cpu did you have on before this one? Does you mobo support 100mhz bus speed?

I had a AMD-K6 - 200ALR
(BACK OF CHIP)
2.9V CORE/3.3V I/O

(OK so i had a little too much fun with that logo!)

I have no idea what my mobo supports, sry, like i said the docs have mysteriously disappeared - things like that happen at my house.

PS: Dangit, the logo didn't work on the preview - if u really want to see it copy the whole thing into notepad and set the font to something monospaced like courier

I think I might have to upgrade my bios. Does anyone know if 4.51pg is the current version for Award? Everywhere i go it seems to be the only one for download cept one site had 6.0 for XP (that doesn't help im running Linux or maybe ME through a boot disk) so that made me wonder

Your motherboard needs to be a "Super" Socket 7 version to support the 100fsb K62 500, otherwise it only supports around K62 300?? something like that!!
It won't have jumpers to go to the 100mhz setting required by the new CPU. Sorry.
Either way Voltage tables, clock mulipliers and front side settings are nearly always printed on the PCB, sometimes they arn't that obvious but they are nearly always there.

Turns out i have a M537DMA33 from PCChips or maybe some other manufacturer who decided to label there mobo as PCChips just to annoy me. Ive got a bios .bin file but i dont know how to install it yet cause i cant find a flasher for Linux and my Windows98SE startup disk won't read on any other computer than my ME. Also, i cant get my 98SE to run long enough to create another one (damn windows) and my ME disk crashes at the menu screen. Unless anyone has any better ideas, im about to rip the &^*@ harddrives out of my 98SE and put them through my Linux box (they came from there in the first place - windows wouldn't install through the other hardware) just so i can use a windows flasher to get this bios upgrade installed

AAAGH, oh well (I was writing my post while paparazi informed me of my fate)

I'll try this thing w/the bios anyway

BTW: NEVER BUY A MOBO FROM PC CHIPS!!! THEY HAVE NO SUPPORT WHATSOEVER AND HALF OF THE LINKS ON THEY'RE HOMEPAGE DON'T WORK!!!

Just did a little research, unfortunately it seems my hunch is probably right.
Socket 7 (not super) Intel VX chipset supporting pre MMX chips with front sides buses of upto 75mhz.
Seems I was also generous with possible supported CPU's cus pre MMX means 200mhz or less

Yeah, it worked!
Just on a whim i tried making the ME boot diskette again and it worked sufficiently for me to update my bios with awdflash.exe. After i upgraded i plugged in the new processor and it booted fine (if you don't count the problem ive been having w/my sound card that is now fixed and wasn't relevant).

Unfortunately, the mobo limits it to 200MHZ, but hey thats faster than 155.

Thanks yall for the help and if anyone knows anything about overclocking mobos let me kno.
