For some odd reason my computer will overheat when the room it is in is Extremely Cold. After the computer has been on for a while and I do something that is hard on the CPU such as 3D games or a batch of downloads, the internal heat warning will go off (High pitch noise from inside the computer). When using HMonitorPro it shows my CPU temp to be only 140 degrees which is in the optimal range for my K6-2 400. There is a heatsink fan combo on my processor and all case fans are filled (total of 3 one on processor and 2 in case). In the BIOS there is no way to set the temp at which you want the sensor to go off, the only option is to disable it. I would rather not do this.

Some ideas given to me already are too: Replace the thermal compound between the heatsink and processor (I should not have to do this since it is silicone). buy a $40 Peltier cooling heatsink. Or just disable it and hope nothing goes wrong.

I have been thinking that maybe it is the sensor itself since I have used it without any problem in the past in warmer temperatures.

Specs: Amd K6-2 400, 96Mg RAM, CDROM, CDRW, Running Windows 98.

Osyris

Do not get a peltier , very dangerious and risky, and one that is "cheap" usally will hurt you most, I would stick to air cooling, like getin a Socket Freezer at 3dcool.com(its just a very effective Heatsink with a big fan) also , get some fans on front blowing in, and fans in back blowing out, must all be blowing in the direction of the power supply for best air flow, basically all you'll need.

a little explanation about peltiers, one side gets freezing(As you already know) the other side gets extremely hot, and if you dont already have a very good Heatsink it ispossible (more than likely) for the peltier to overheat and burn itself out, a dead peltier will act as an insulator, not allowing any heat to escape to from the surface to the heatsink, therefore burning out your CPU as well, some of the much more expensive Peltiers, have temperature units attached, to alarm you, but thing with peltiers, they can overheat and kill your cpu within a matter of seconds, Thats what happened to my K6-450, which was overclocked to 500 using a 70Watt Peltier.

well one Idea I had was to do , Fan+HeatSink+Peltier+HeatSink+CPU, so that if the peltier dies, you have the heatsink on the surface, but even then you need some kind of fan on the side. and its not very effective.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML,Visual InterDev 6, ASP(WebProgramming), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)

I have an amd k6-2 400 and it usually runs about 30 degrees. It used to hover around 48 before I got my new case with two case fans and a lot of air holes. I am not sure as to what is a safe range to run the chip at, but I do know that the cooler the better.

As far as a peltier goes, there is another problem with it in humid climates, condensation. This is bad because the condensation will drip off the cooler and onto the live electrical parts, resulting in some very bad things!

Maybe the temperature sensor on your Mobo is malfunctioning. You could always try a thermometer to see what the reading is. What you could do is get the temperature protection to trip, shut the computer down and then see if the temperatures correspond.
fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I am interested in Mining Software, as well as Genetic Algorithms. Try a few things

Is your cpu overclocked, if so, try the clock speed it should be clocked at, to see if the problem will go away, try it for a few days. Are you sure the fan attached to the heatsink is working.

also before you start buying stuff like for cooling, check the company at resellerratings.com, it has ratings over hundreds of online resellers, places like Buy.com BestBuy, CompuPlus, etc actually have a poor rating.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML,Visual InterDev 6, ASP(WebProgramming), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)
