i'm looking for some assistance in solving my copy n paste issue. every time i do the copy n paste action i get a strange string of characters on the paste.

for example: m8 ^/
?bKt?xy#2&B[3~VIGnp<*B.#p?Sx^^ri( vI[?)&D*pL)+@
?mT

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Is there a problem with the Mouse, can you try a substitute?

Do you see this behavior in Safe Mode?

Does it only happen with text or is it also occurring for files?

Is System Restore an option if it has only just begun?

What happens if you copy your example

m8 ^/?bKt?xy#2&B[3~VIGnp<*B.#p?Sx^^ri( vI[?)&D*pL)+@?mT

Does it get that right when you paste it?

Have you opened up Clipbrd.exe and had a look at what is sitting in the Clipboard viewer? Do it before and after copying and pasting. What is in there after a reboot?

That usually happens when one copies from a Word or RTF file to a plain TXT file... the original text contains control and formatting characters that cause a replacement to be issued...

it is also caused by coding issues, e.g. when copying from Unicode (UTF-8 / 16) to Windows-1252 or ISO-8859 encoding...

i haven't tried safe mode yet. i'm not sure how to get into it without it prompting me after a reboot.

i have tried the ctrl+c and ctrl+v as my substitute for the mouse and the same thing happens

i think it also is occurring with files except it won't let me paste them. but will let me drag and drop

system restore is not an option

if i copy my example and try and paste it the same thing will show and it has not changed

if i open clipbrd.exe it goes crazy and flashes all the different types of stuff i tried to copy in the strange character format. interesting!! dosen't sound good.

and last but not least i'm just trying this with plain text. i do not have word installed nor am i trying some advanced format or Unicode (UTF-8 / 16)

thanks again

Press F8 as the machine is booting up, to bring up Windows Boot Menu. Then Choose Safe Mode from there.

Try a Bootable OS disc, like a Linux Live CD distro or a BartPE just to rule out Windows itself, if you still have copying issues, it may be a problem with your memory, however unlikely it may seem. So also run a Memory check for good measure.

It also sounds like the file Clipbrd.exe. or even the user profile, might be corrupted, but check for faulty RAM and hard drive too.

Do you ever power down the machine? Have you tried unplugging it from the mains and depressing the power on button for about 10 seconds to clear the stored memory items from the machine's circuitry?

Do you have the same problem if you create another user and logon with that?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
