Hi All ,

Here's the situation...

New comp , (4 months old) , I have a decent quality power supply (Coolermaster Trupower 450w) and a 540J p4 , on a Asus P5GD1 , and two 512MB PC3200 Dual Channel for mem,

It's worked great since I built it , like perfect , not even a hiccup , then last night it just dropped , now i can;t even turn it on! , no beeps no nothing ,If i turn it off at the wall , it will on the first try of starting up spin the fans etc and then shut-off after about 1/2 a second, there is a power indicator LED on the mainboard , so I can establish that there still is power , I checked for bulging caps , and also check all connector on mainboard ,for the switch and front panel etc....

From what I understand a good power supply rarely dies , I sure hope I can get warranty on whatever is dead...

Any ideas/ideers?

Sounds like the power supply.
Even decent ones sometimes fail.
Thankfully less frequently and usually without disasterous concequences

Try reseating all your power connectors first, make sure there aren't any loose wires or connections.
Remove all addon cards and periferals (it is possible for an addon to stop boot)

Thanks for the link to the FAQ , will run through it with a known good power supply tonight

Also thanks paparazzi for re-assuring me that this is prob a power supply issue , I started thinkin fried CPU at first , but It's too new for that to likely happen , and it wasn;t overclocked so everything was running well within spec....

Thanks again guys...

Intels have built in thermal protection, they throttle back when they get hot, infact many on this forum will remember the astonishing review on one site, where the recently released P4 Northwood (at that time) was run bare, without a cooler at all! [surprise]

Yikes! a Northwood P4 with no cooler! , Bet that didn't work long... ,

One thing I've seen more than once is a bad CD or DVD drive preventing startup. Discoeenct the power cable from the drives and the IDE connector from the MB (the cable could be shorted as well).

Just yesterday I had a customer who had this exact problem, except it was older machine. The problem was the power switch on the front of the unit. Discovered this by opening the case and removing the two-pin PWR connector on motherboard from the power switch with power on, the fans began to spin up, there was power then it shutdown after a few seconds. I temporarily attached an old spare power switch I had laying around to the connector on the motherboard, then it worked like a champ.

Thanks for the helpful post here guys...

Since it's about 4 months old , everything in that case is under warranty, so I took it back to my retailer , turn out the motherboard was frapped , It was grounding out somewhere it shouldn't....

Amazing, as I spent extra $$$ on this name brand board , Asus have always done well in my books , in fact I've never actually seen a Asus go belly-up , usually it's some cheap "unknown" generic knock-off mboard that has bad caps or cheap components on it...

Thanks again for the help though, I should get my comp back tonight with a new board , hopefully it isn't a stepdown from my old one...

Just to give an update to anyone who helped...

Turns out both the CPU and the Vid card bit the dust , They most I was told about it was that when one went it took out the other... ,

Thank God for friends with computer stores and warranty...
