Am fairly new to PM[6.5] for Windows. I usually like to "cheat" in documents to get what I need but am determined to do this one thing properly.
PROBLEM: Two column page - left column contains dates - right column contains main text. Would like to create a [style] where a heading appears on right in bold type and a one line text [containing a date in light type] appears on the left column adjacent, right justified. I would "normally" just paste in a bit of type for the left hand date - but would like to ensure that the horizontal alingment is accurate. Any ideas?

Hi, missdeevious,

I'm not sure I've got the full picture, but PM only supports PARAGRAPH styles, not CHARACTER styles which is what I think you're describing.

However, InDesign supports both Paragraph and Character styles.

Hi BigJohnD
Thanks for the reply. I agree what I described is a little sketchy. I would say what I need is a PARAGRAPH style solution. Forget the bold and light type issue. Would it be possible to create a line of text in a right column, left justified - and a line of text on it's left side, right justified appearing as if aligned in an adjacent column?

Below is an example of the poblem:

Thanks again

Hi, missdeevious,

The layout in your screen capture is no problem, but the line with date and the heading would have to have the same PARAGRAPH style. Any differences in character style between the date and the heading would have to be applied manually throughout the document. :-(

Thanks again BigJohnD

Okay - so forget the style of type difference - how do I get the placement of the date text next to another line of text as in the example jpeg?

Sorry - am being a pain here I'm sure!

Hi, missdeevious,

I'm off to bed now, let me know how you get on.

One of the things that annoys me about the styles pallet is that it changes everything in the paragraph no matter what.

I wish that you could select type within a paragraph and apply a style to it alone.

For instance prices in a menu.

If they are on the same line with the copy then I always have to go through and set the size, weight and size for every one. I can't just select it and hit the price style button.
It doesn’t seem that it would be that hard to have it apply to the paragraph if you put the cursor in it and the selected type if you drag and select specific type within a paragraph.

But then again I don’t think that it should over ride the styles pallet on character weight. Either. If you apply a style to the type it should change to the specified style and weight no matter what weight the type is to start with.

Hi, Mike,

InDesign has Charcter Styles which do exactly as you describe.

If you are in the USA or Canada there is a not-to-missed upgrade offer for PM users to ID2 for USD299 The "rest of the world" is excluded.
