We have a laptop that has a screen that is barely visibe. External monitors that are attached to it work fine, and all software options have been exhausted (service packs, updated BIOS, Function + F10 for brightness, new video driver, etc). I would assume it is a hardware problem, but any ideas what piece of hardware (screen or systemboard)? Would it need to be replaced or just tighten a connection somewhere? Thanks...

dim lcd panels are usually the result of a faulty inverter board..this board is typically part of the display panel assembly.

It could be a poor connection (doubtful)..you would have to remove the bezel around the display panel and check the connections,,,you could also check the connection from the system board as well. Try unplugging and use some compressed air to blow out the connector. Particles resulting from panel movement (which results in cable movement) can accumulate between the male pins and the female sockets....known as fretting corrosion. Doug

I tried to clean those connections and reattached the cables after taking apart the laptop. When reconnected and rebuilt the screen came back to normal, but went very dim after a few seconds. I have resoved this issue by changing out screens with a different laptop that had a shot systemboard...
