I have a baystack 450-24t wiht a fiber gbic. When the gbic is connected to my cisco gbic, I am not able to pull an IP address from my DHCP server. I have a feeling that VLAN's are installed on the baystack switch.

The problem is, when I TRY to connect to me baystack, I am not able to see anything in the hyperterminal windows. I am using both hyperterminal and terraterm pro. Niether work. I am not using a null modem cable. I am using a standard serial cable with a gender bender on one end.

Is there anyone out there who can help me? I would like to gain access to the config stuff through the comm port, but if there is any other way to do a hardware reset on it (via jumper or anything else) that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

beyond encouraging you to put a null modem adaptor on your serial cable, nothing springs to mind.

If you have already set an IP address, you can telnet, but it did not sound like you had.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I got this switch from a company that went out of business. So there is no way of knowing what the IP address is. And I have tried to use the null modem cable and didn't work.

Hi.

If you have other nortel gear, connect it with the 450, and use optivity switch manager and see if the new switch appears on the map. Not sure if this will work if the uplink ports aren´t the same, just something I thought of. Please tell me if it works...=)

Try downloading Hyperterm Private Edition.
Make sure you have the correct settings configured for the com port.

Can you console into other switches?

Per the documentation (freely accessible from the Nortel web site without login)...

Set your terminal to 9600-8-none-1 and enable flow control (Xon/Xoff). You must use a straight through cable as the serial port acts as a DCE device. Establish a connection and press CTRL+Y to begin the session.

You can then change your IP settings and configure VLAN's. You don't need special terminal emulation software. The two you've tried should work.

I am having the exact same problem.

I am sure all my settings are correct; I have checked them multiple times. I am using Tera Term Pro.

The only thing I can figure is that I must be using the wrong cable.

This is the exact cable I am trying to use...

The connectors are correct for the laptop and the switch, but I can not get the console screen to come up!

Am I using the wrong type of cable?

Thanks in advance for any help. This is driving me crazy.

This is an old switch and I do not know the IP address so I really need to get this cable connection working.

Cisco and many other network product use null modem cables like the one you have but Nortel uses straight through connectors.

to use your cable with Nortel gear add a null modem adaptor

Null modem cable plus a null modem adaptor is back to straight through like you want for Nortel, plus you can remove the adtaptor for use with Cisco.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
