I am installing a Cisco 1841 router at two locations. These locations are connected via Point-to-point T1. I am using an Adtran TSU 120 with to fractionalize the DSO's so that I can pass Data traffic and connect a remote PBX gateway. I have programmed the DSX-1 port of the adtran for DSO's 1-16 and also programmed my cisco S0/0/0 for service-module t1 timeslots 1-16, line coding matches as well as channel speed. I have done this before for the same customer on a 2600 series router and all is fine. However, when I connect the WIC to the DSX-1 port of the Adtran, they do not link. If I plug the circuit into the Cisco directly, all is fine; as well as when I connect the adtran to the existing 2600, all is fine. All provisioning on the 2600 and 1841 is the same and the WIC's are the same. Help Please!! any assitance is greatly appreciated.

Are you getting any T1 alarms?

Your PBX is connected to the Drop & Insert Module on the TSU120?

Does the WIC show any alarms?

make sure your clock settings are set correctly on the router...

I think this may be your problem....do a show diag and see if the WIC shows. The 1841 must have a WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 and not the WIC-1DSU-T1....the older WIC will not work in the new family ISR routers.

That is of course if the serial is a T1 wic as you really never stated what wic it was.

Both WICs are WIC-1DSU-T1-V2. I don't believe that the WIC would be the trouble as the circuit comes up just fine when I connect directly to the T-1. Clocking on the router is set correctly; internal on one side, Line on the other. I have no T-1 alarms since the Adtran is connected to the T-1, I have a yellow alarm on the WIC at both ends of the circuit and a red alarm on the adtran at both ends of the circuit. My PBX gateway is connected to the V.35 port on both Adtrans. (PBX connected by an MCK Gateway). Thanks everyone for the input.

have you verified the config in the adtran? clocking, framing, line coding? can you loop the adtran? will that clear the errors on the router wics?

sorry i have no experience with the adtran device itself...

i think JOAMON is correct.. the T1 should terminate in the adtran at both locations.. and then you can run a voice path and a data path through it.

I do not know why it would work with the 2600 and not the 1841. You might try swapping the WICs as they are the same model and you know the one in the 2600 works and see if that makes any difference. I have a 2811 with three working WICs and hade to RMA two of them with Cisco as new defective when getting it setup.

I have swapped WICs to no avail. I have also verified the adtran setup. The Adtran terminates the T-1 then I pass data channels off to the Cisco DSO's 1-16 esf b8zs 64k/channel. I have the exact same setup working on several other sites. The voice goes through the V-35 port due to the MCK Pbx-gateway uses this type of connection. The DSX-1 port simply passes all info to the Cisco allowing it to controll the Data. Thanks all for the continued assistance.

Consider this. When I setup to router back to back in a lab and wanted to connect t1 wic to t1 wic back to back I had to make a special cable.

1--5
2--4
4--2
5--1

Maybe you need something like this. Do you know if the cable on the other sights is a std, x-over, or custom cable as above?
Do a show diag and make sure the WIC is registering in the router properly and not as unknown.

It would appear that I have solved the problem at least in a sense. I tested with a new Cisco 1721 and found that I had the same issue. I then tried an Adtran Netvanta router and it worked just fine. When I looked closer at the IOS of the 1841 and the 1721 I noticed that they were both the same IP base IOS 12.4(1c). So I upgraded the IOS on the 1721 and still had an issue. Next I compared the IOS of the 2600 and the other two, finding that the 2600 had an IOS 0f IP Base 12.3(6c). I then downgraded the IOS of the 1721 to 12.3(6f) and found that it works just fine. It would appear that Cisco may be trying to prevent The use of adtran equipment in conjuction with their routers (just a Theory). Thanks for all of the input.

Think that is what you need to do is make a custom cable. Look at the following link for the pinout of the DSX-1. You need to croos the transmitts on one side to the recieves on the other side.

What are the pinout assignments for the TSU IQ+ DSX-1 port?
The pinout assignment of the DSX-1 port of a TSU IQ+ is listed in the following matrix.

Pin Name Description
1 R1 RX DATA-RING Receive data from the DTE (PBX)
2 T1 RX DATA-TIP Receive data from the DTE (PBX)
3 UNUSED N/A
4 R TX DATA-RING Send data toward the DTE (PBX)
5 T TX DATA-TIP Send data toward the DTE (PBX)
6,7,8 UNUSED N/A

The above list for TSU IQ but is the same pinout for TSU 120.

Part of the problem maybe that the normal design use for the ADTRAN TSU120 is to use the DSX-1 port for voice transmission and the V.35 port for data transmission. Your application is very unique! Not that it might not work, but as you suspect there maybe a conflict with the Cisco. I would suggest you call Adtran tech support and see if they know of any "gotchas" in type of setup.

Hope this helps!

Yes, The application is working just fine now. The application is exactly the same on 5 PPP circuits with the voice passing through the V.35 port and data passing through the DSX-1. I believe there is no issue with this setup as all traffic is data once it hits the adtran, the only differencr is that the DSX-1 port passes all assigned DSO's as a group (eg DSO's 1-16 is 1024M) and the V.35 port passes the DSO's as individual channels (eg DSO's 17-24 are 8 64K channels). This allows 8 phones to be placed on the far end after the MCK PBX gateway breaks out the channels.
Again, I thank you all for your valuable input.
