I have a Sony CD-RW CRX175A1 on a Intel 2.0 with 500 Ram and WinXp Home edition. After installing different burner software, like CDRWin, Discjuggler, EAC and CloneCD the burner door wont stay closed and recognize the cd, so I can't read or burn any cd. My question is, how do I get back to the original stage where the pc was functioning perfect? I've tryed a role back, uninstalling driver update, removing the new burning software, removing what trace I could find in the registry of them and removing the cd in the hardware tree. The burner gets recognized when I restart and installs, as it should, but still the door opens before it can read the cd. I would like to avoid a reinstall of windows or a format if possible, so I hope there is someone that has a suggestion that will solve my problem.
Thanks in advance,
Dennis

Thanks for your swift response. I have been to Sonys page, but as the baydoor wont stay closed, I cant run the Drivecheck and there isn't any firm upgrade available.
So any new suggestions are very welcome

You should try the writer in a other computer. If the door doesn't close in this computer also and won't write cd's than you've got a serious hardware malfunction on your hand.

If it does work then you should check if your IDE cable is properly connected. Try putting the writer as a master on a IDE channel with no other device connected to the IDE cable.
What does it do. If the problem still exists then you have a software conflict between the drivers of the different cd-burner programs. Try to remove every program that has something to do with burning cd's. Always use the programs uninstall program or use windows software remove function.

If still nothing works then you have to consider to format your hard-drive and reinstalling windows.

Good luck!

Hi Kocky,
Sounds like the next logical step to take, thanks!
I'll get back when I've tryed it.

I've tryed it in another pc, still the door won't stay closed. So it must be some major malfunction with the Cdr unit?
Thanks for all your replies.

Roms have various designs of mechanisms but most have some sort of tray switch, internally mounted to sense if the tray is open or closed.
The contacts can become tarnished or corroded thus sending the wrong info to the drives circuitry.
To get to the switch you will need to remove and partially strip the drive, clean with fine wet n dry paper or similar placed between the contacts.

If the drive is still under warranty, then of course you don't want to attempt to repair it yourself! But if it's an older drive that isn't, then what have you got to lose?

Burners are so cheap nowadays. If you're forced to buy a new one, go with LiteOn, Plextor, or TDK. LiteOn drives are among the fastest and cheapest, though with limited support. If you buy them online, you can easily find the 48x or 52x models for under $70.

Paparazi, thanks for the reply. Can you tell anything about where the mention contact would be? My cdr is a Sony! Is it along side the plastic housing or on some print and is it usually a photocell or what?
Any suggestion appreciated!

I stripped and repaired two CDroms and two writers today, typically the switch is on the tray mechanism, it could be the type I mentioned that can be cleaned but I have to say some drives use sealed micro switches as well (although these are less prone to fail anyway)
Obviously I cannot talk you through a repair because drives are all differant but usually after removing the four top screws take off the front facia panel by pushing in the retaining lugs, the whole innerds should now come away from the metal casing, by moving the tray in and out and examining the tray mechanism you should spot the switch, as I say it may or may not be the type that can be cleaned. Best of luck. Martin

I am having the same problem you did DocDj. Since the last post on this thread was from Apr 5, 2003, I was wondering if you ever solved the problem? My burner just started doing this about two days ago...

Hi "riddic",
Sorry, I didn't solve the problem my self. I was lucky that there still was some garantie left on the product, so I returned it and got a new one back.
If your garantie has run out and you have a little bit of technical skill, my suggestion would be to follow the advice written by "paparazi".
Good luck with it, [2thumbsup]
