Hello all, I'm new to the forum--

Several days ago I turned on my computer to find that my CD-Rom drives are no longer being recognized. I'm not sure what happened, as just the day before, if not the same day, I was using them just fine. I have a compaq 40x cd-rom and a polaroid burnmax 32 cd-rw. In device manager I get this:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

I tried reseating them, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, letting them be detected, all that--to no avail. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Nathan

1) What version of Windows?
2) CDROM drives sharing the same IDE channel?
3) Have you tried removing only one from the PC to see if the other is detected?

The biggest factor is the version of Windows you're running before I can offer any real suggestions...

Windows XP. I did try removing one, still nothing. Neither work. It's just weird... they worked, now all of a sudden they don't

Have you changed any settings recently, like DMA or PIO on the IDE devices? I had a similar problem when I tried to force DMA on one of my CDROM drives that only accepted PIO Mode.

For starters, go into Device Manager and right-click the Secondary IDE controller (if that's the one that has the CDROM drives). You'll see under the settings tab just what I'm talking about. Right now, both devices probably say "DMA if available". Try setting the Compaq 40x CDROM drive to PIO Mode, but leave the Polaroid burner at DMA if available.

If that still doesn't work, go here:

Whooo... half way there.

It got the comp to recognize the drives now (Thanks!) but it only sees my burner as a cd-rom drive rather than a cd-rw drive. How do I fix that? I've unisntalled/reinstalled a few times. It's a polaroid burnmax, didn't come with drivers, and there are none to speak of to download on the web--so I'm left with what windows wants to do with it.

Actually, you're probably already there. CDROM drives (including burners) do not come with drivers, nor are there ones for download. The reason is firmware. What is that? You can find a ton of info on the web, but the short explanation is "built in". The instructions Windows needs to use a CDROM drive is included in the drive itself so that they can be pulled automatically. No setup or install is needed.

Now, are you familiar with burners?

The reason why I ask is because it seems like you are trying to drag and drop files onto your burner's drive letter. You can't do that without using a program like DirectCD or INCD which formats a CD-RW disk and makes it look like a regular folder to Windows.

Also, didn't you get software with your burner. Roxio or Nero are the two popular brands. Their software is what you use to make music and data CD's. Just let me know if this is enough info...

Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

Of course I'm familiar with burners :)

I use Nero; nero isn't detecting the CD-RW as a Cd burner, and in my computer in says just like the other, "CD-ROM"

Well, at this point it would be hard to say if it's a Windows problem or software-related with Nero. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it? I noticed that you already said you did, but I wasn't sure if you were talking about the drive or the software.

Still nothing. This is really a pisser...

Windows XP home. Working fine untill Nero 6 was installed. XP no longer "finds" any of the DVD drives. Drives uninstalled, system rebooted. Drives reinstalled and system rebooted. No change. Drives are shoen in device manager, but the following message is displayed:Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
I have tried cdogg's method and microsofts ( fix. Unfortunatly no success.

Any hints and tips would be appreciated.
