Hi all
The ever increasing number of graduates from university with good results do not always end up with a desired job. Economy worldwide has impacted all industries. There is slowdown in the job market for everything. When the IT department is not regarded as a profit center, the staff are often the first to go. Programmers with a lot of experience even find difficulty to find the next job in line. What kind of job is there available for MIS graduates without any work experience? Should everybody now change the field of study to meet the market demand, for example marketing or other commerce studies? Is IT really the future or more of business side?

I wouldn't bother trying to become a technical guru in anything specific - sooner or later your technical knowledge will need to be changed/updated or ditched.

Business process knowledge seems to be amuch more portable skill these days. Whereas a lot of business knowledge can be fairly general across many sectors, technical IT knowledge is specific to the skill set you have.

Don't believe me? Try convincing a prospective employer that you will be a great C++ programmer when you have spent the last 20 years programming in Cobol.

I think the market is pretty hard on people with specific technical knowledge. You are right that people with business process knowledge can move around easily (hopefully). However, for fresh graduate of IS, don't you think that they will end up not in a career that they don't wish to be in for a long period, for eg. programming job.

Thus should young people learnt more of technical knowledge and getting first hand experience prior furthering to study IS degree?

The university prepares the student in a broad way, so it is easy to be employed in various fields. You would be startled if you know the back ground of staff people in various industries. You need to be flexible and be aware of changes, that way you always have some thing interesting to do.
Another thing what is the desired job? Every job has it pleasures and headaches. 75% of the problems of managers is human related and 25% is technical. The higher you are on the ladder, the less techno. S. van Els

I would like to let you know that as a mis grad, you have many fine opertunites in the fast food or janatorial services sectors.

just to let you know McDonalds has some of the finest software engineers on payroll some of them even get to use a computer.

you actually have a very valuble skill but its a case of supply and demand. and right now is a buyer's market. dont give up though there are a lot of people that started IT careers from lowly positions. Im a data base manager for a telemarketing company and started out on the phone.
