Hey,
sorry if this has already been covered, and i did try and search but nothing came up. so here it is...

I installed IIS on my XP pro and everything worked great, no problems, no hassels no nother. But i wanted to use apache, so i went to apache.org and downloaded the installer and installed it.

heres the problem, i can view my site via localhost it works great, but via my ip address, or my subdmain, it a diffrent sorry, it keeps timing out as if it can not pick it up. now i went to httpd and tried to find the section that allows everyone to view it, still no luck, then i thought maybe its my eyes, so i got the apache admin panel software, and made sure my root dir was so to "allow from: ALL" still nothing.

i also made sure my router allowed port 80 and it is open, also since XP has SP2, i made sure that, that firewall allows it, i added it to the list of safe software, and opened both port 80's (UDP UNP, i think thats what they are)

still NO LUCK!

anyone have any ideas to what i maybe missing?

Thanks in advance.

again, aim using Windows XP Pro w. SP2

Is apache configured to listen on your IP address? Did you shut off IIS before running Apache? Do you have directive that says:

Order deny,allow
Allow from all

I'm thinking along the same lines as aznluvsmc. Since apache answers when you type localhost, that means it is running. However, it seems to only be listening for the loopback device (127.0.0.1). Check the "Listen" directive in httpd.conf. It should be set to listen for all addresses. A common mistake is to have it set to the public ip. The router will intercept traffic for this address and foward it to the local ip of the server. You need to change it to one of the following:

Listen 192.168.1.10:80 (change to server's actual ip)
or
Listen *.80

Also make sure you have ServerName defined. If you have a sub-domain from a pointer service such as dyndns, do not use the ServerName.

hey, thanks you Aznluvsmc & ThythmAce for your help, BUT it did not work, since iam still really new at this, i was wondering if you can please take a look at my httpd.conf to make sure it is right.

#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL: for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
# at <URL:# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2"

#
# ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
# If unspecified (the default), the scoreboard will be stored in an
# anonymous shared memory segment, and will be unavailable to third-party
# applications.
# If specified, ensure that no two invocations of Apache share the same
# scoreboard file. The scoreboard file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.
#
#ScoreBoardFile logs/apache_runtime_status

#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts.
#
PidFile logs/httpd.pid

#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 300

#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive On

#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
#
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100

#
# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
# same client on the same connection.
#
KeepAliveTimeout 15

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>

#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to

### Section 2: 'Main' server configuration
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# <VirtualHost> definition. These values also provide defaults for
# any <VirtualHost> containers you may define later in the file.
#
# All of these directives may appear inside <VirtualHost> containers,
# in which case these default settings will be overridden for the
# virtual host being defined.
#

#
# ServerAdmin: Your address, where problems with the server should be
# e-mailed. This address appears on some server-generated pages, such
# as error documents. e.g. admin@your-domain.com
#
ServerAdmin me@localhost

#
# ServerName gives the name and port that the server uses to identify itself.
# This can often be determined automatically, but we recommend you specify
# it explicitly to prevent problems during startup.
#
# If this is not set to valid DNS name for your host, server-generated
# redirections will not work. See also the UseCanonicalName directive.
#
# If your host doesn't have a registered DNS name, enter its IP address here.
# You will have to access it by its address anyway, and this will make
# redirections work in a sensible way.
#
ServerName
#
# UseCanonicalName: Determines how Apache constructs self-referencing
# URLs and the SERVER_NAME and SERVER_PORT variables.
# When set "Off", Apache will use the Hostname and Port supplied

# ServerName directive.

#
# AddType allows you to add to or override the MIME configuration
# file mime.types for specific file types.
#
#AddType application/x-tar .tgz
#
# AddEncoding allows you to have certain browsers (Mosaic/X 2.1+) uncompress
# information on the fly. Note: Not all browsers support this.
# Despite the name similarity, the following Add* directives have nothing
# to do with the FancyIndexing customization directives above.
#
#AddEncoding x-compress .Z
#AddEncoding x-gzip .gz .tgz
#
# If the AddEncoding directives above are commented-out, then you
# probably should define those extensions to indicate media types:
#
AddType application/x-compress .Z
AddType application/x-gzip .gz .tgz

#
# AddHandler allows you to map certain file extensions to "handlers":
# actions unrelated to filetype. These can be either built into the server
# or added with the Action directive (see below)
#
# To use CGI scripts outside of ScriptAliased directories:
# (You will also need to add "ExecCGI" to the "Options" directive.)
#
#AddHandler cgi-script .cgi

#
# For files that include their own HTTP headers:
#
#AddHandler send-as-is asis

#
# For server-parsed imagemap files:
#
#AddHandler imap-file map

#
# For type maps (negotiated resources):
# (This is enabled by default to allow the Apache "It Worked" page
# to be distributed in multiple languages.)
#
AddHandler type-map var

#
# Filters allow you to process content before it is sent to the client.
#
# To parse .shtml files for server-side includes (SSI):
# (You will also need to add "Includes" to the "Options" directive.)
#
#AddType text/html .shtml
#AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml

#
# Action lets you define media types that will execute a script whenever
# a matching file is called. This eliminates the need for repeated URL
# pathnames for oft-used CGI file processors.
# Format: Action media/type /cgi-script/location
# Format: Action handler-name /cgi-script/location

#
# Customizable error responses come in three flavors:
# 1) plain text 2) local redirects 3) external redirects
#
# Some examples:
#ErrorDocument 500 "The server made a boo boo."
#ErrorDocument 404 /missing.html
#ErrorDocument 404 "/cgi-bin/missing_handler.pl"
#ErrorDocument 402 #

#
# Putting this all together, we can internationalize error responses.
#
# We use Alias to redirect any /error/HTTP_<error>.html.var response to
# our collection of by-error message multi-language collections. We use
# includes to substitute the appropriate text.
#
# You can modify the messages' appearance without changing any of the
# default HTTP_<error>.html.var files by adding the line:
#
# Alias /error/include/ "/your/include/path/"
#
# which allows you to create your own set of files by starting with the
# @exp_errordir@/include/ files and copying them to /your/include/path/,
# even on a per-VirtualHost basis. The default include files will display
# your Apache version number and your ServerAdmin email address regardless
# of the setting of ServerSignature.
#
# The internationalized error documents require mod_alias, mod_include
# and mod_negotiation. To activate them, uncomment the following 30 lines.

# Alias /error/ "@exp_errordir@/"

### Section 3: Virtual Hosts
#
# VirtualHost: If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.

#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
#NameVirtualHost *:80

#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.
#
#<VirtualHost *:80>
# ServerAdmin webmaster@dummy-host.example.com
# DocumentRoot /# ServerName dummy-host.example.com
# ErrorLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-error_log
# CustomLog logs/dummy-host.example.com-access_log common
#</VirtualHost>

Thank you guys in advance.
the 192.160.0.3 is the ip address to my server/computer that the router has assigned.

thanks.

Where are you trying to reach it FROM?

If you're trying to hit that IP from the Internet, you never will. That's an IP that your router is assigning to your LAN side and it is NOT routed to the Internet.

Can you reach that IP from another machine in your LAN? If you can, then Apache is fine.

If you want to reach that machine from the Internet, you need to know what IP your ISP has assigned your router. That will be it's NAT address that you can reach from the Internet. Then, you need to make sure your router is configured to send port 80 traffic to your internal 192.160.0.3 machine.

A lot of this will depend on your router's capabilities and configuration.

Start by trying to hit your 192.160.0.3 machine from another machine on your LAN.

Hope this helps.

Hey SamBones,
Thanks for your reply...
Now i can reach the server via 192.168.0.3, no problem, now my static ip address by my DSL provider is: 65.6.130.158 and i tried to replace the lan ip with the main ip, but that dident work either, unless it takes more then a minute or two to relolve or somthing... dont know.

also as for my router, well i had IIS on there, and it was working fine, but apache just wont work.

Any other ideas?

Thank Advance

Hey,
Okay, i messed around a little bit more today, and heres somthing eles that kinda intresting... i changed the ports to 8080 and still no luck, i can goto localhost:8080 and 192.168.0.3:8080 but cant go to mydomainname.com:8080 or myipaddress:8080

any other ideas?
Thanks in Advance.

When I go here: it seems to be working but since I am seeing a directory listing, I guess you do not have an index.html page in your DocumentRoot. If you want to use a name other than index.html, look for this line:

DirectoryIndex index.html index.html.var

and add the name of your default page.

One last note. Get rid of :80 in the ServerName

Hey RhythmAce, i guessing you check it within a couple of mins of your posting, and just beat me to this posting lol.

unfortunatly, i needed the site to be up FAST, and since it was down for a while, i decided to go back to IIS while i try to figure it out, but in the mean time, if anyone deos have any suggestions or anything that they see in the httpd.conf that needs to be changed, then please let me know, as i will be try apache regularly, since i want to get away from the IIS+PHP setup since alot of people are saying its bad.

but yes, like i said it works perfectly with IIS just not apache, and thats why it working right now, becuase i have uninstalled apache and re-installed IIS for the time being.

Thanks again

If you are goint to use mysql and php along with apache, you may want to do a google search for WAMP. That stands for Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP. These come with apache preconfigured to work with all these including perl. They also come with a lot of tools to help you administer you server and databases. Here is just one of many good ones out there:

Thanks for the tip, i did download and try to use:
1) WAMP
2) Xampp
3) PHPDev
4) phptiad

but non seem to be working cause of this apache error thats why i wanted to install just apache first and get that working so i can use one of theos packs.

Thanks Though.

When you uninstalled IIS, did you also remove it as a service? Is it possible that it is still running in the background and will not let apache start? There is something using port 80 and if IIS works, that would be where I'd look first. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts, it is still running as a service even though you deleted or uninstalled it. After trying to start apache, look at the logs and see if anything is thaere that will give you a clue.

Hey,
well i checked services many time, and all the times apache was always running, but never checked to see if IIS for removed from services or not, i am doing that right now, and will post a update shortly.

thanks for the tip.

Okay, i took of IIS and checked my services (went up and down like 3 times with fine comb so to speak) but it IIS is not on the list anymore at all. so aim gussing that it is always removed from the list when uninstalled.

also it just hit me that, since i can access it from localhost and my 192.168.0.3 IP address then that means apache is starting up, hence nothing eles was running on port 80 before either...

i donno seems like a odd problem, i even disabled my windows XP firewall to do testing...

You can't access the web server from the Internet unless you enable port forwarding on your router just like SamBones said earlier.

Hey Aznluvsmc,
It is enabled, like I said earlier, it is enabled since aim using IIS Perfectly with no problems at all :)

Thanks.
