I can not get access to any of the following websites:

....the list goes on...basically any web pages that appear to have anything to do with anti virus.

When I try to access them, a "Log In" diaglog box pops up asking for a Username and Password.

For example, if I type into a web browser..I get a diaglog box asking for a username/password to connect to ftp.symantec.org?! Clicking cancel takes me to
Any ideas?!

I can access the Amazon HTTPS fine....

I have installed Opera and Netscape - both browsers suffer the same problem as IE.

I also have a W2K installation on the same PC - everything is fine in the W2k installation - although it rarely used and so there are many security updates which are not installed on the W2k Partition.

When I do a tracert to - why does it immediately try to find ftp.symantec.org? I'm sure this is the root of the problem - although it doesnt explain why I cant access any other anti virus related website.

Did you ever have:

Norton Internet Firewall installed?
Zone Alarm installed?
McAfee Firewall installed?

Ive previously had Norton Firewall installed - it's actually an installation of Norton Systemworks that I think MAY have caused this problem. I currently have McAfee firewall installed but keep it disabled as it uses a lot of CPU processing. However I have only recently installed McAfee firewall - the problem was occuring before then.
