Can't get NIC to connect

I have a Latitude with a Docking station running Win 2000 Pro and using either the Docking station NIC OR a Xircom combo card I get the message that the cable is not connected after booting. This Laptop was on a Domain that is no longer present, was on a Wireless previously and had several other NIC's installed previously. The Domain not being there shouldn't cause this problem though.

I have tried running the Laptop outside the Docking station and it still got the message that the cable was disconnected. I know, I know, is the cable bad? No, I just made it AND tested it w/a cable tester.

Will you get that message if IP addresses have run out? I have installed and uninstalled the NIC, TCP/IP and Client several times, to no avail.

HELP!

In device manager remove all nic cards then go to network configuration and join a workgroup (as opposed to a domain). Turn off dhcp unless you have a router that supports it and try again.

DHCP has been turned on in the Router. I have removed the NICs, after turning on DHCP, still get the same error. Only one NIC at a time shows in Device manager.

I will try that in the AM. THANKS!

Jedori,

I know you alredy did but please try the following:

- Disconnect network cable(s).
- Boot in safe mode (no network, no prompt) -- PRESS F8
- Log on as administrator.
- Right click on My Network Places and click on Properties
- Right click on ANY of the connections and click on Properties.
- Remove everything inside the window that says "This connection uses the following items".
- Click OK to close all windows BUT DO NOT RESTART (click LATER or NO to any related question).
- Right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
- Click on Hardware and then Device Manager.
- Double-click on Network Adapters.
- Remove ALL the devices.
- Close all windows and SHUT DOWN.
- Turn on the computer and let it discover the NIC.
- Restart the computer.
- Connect the cable
- Let us know what happens.

"Cable not connected" has nothing to do with IP's from the DHCP. Even if you don't get an IP you can still connect.

Later,
Harry

Thanks y'all! I'm off to try these this morning.

This may sound obvious but do you get link lights?

Since it is a laptop, there is no harm trying another known good patch cable probably even back at the patch panel in your net workroom.

Regardless of your configuration (IP address valid or not, DHCP enable or not, ETC.) as long as device manager shows that your NIC it is installed correctly and all of your cables and hardware is good and turned on back to your hub, router, switch etc. you should get link lights at the NIC card.

Hope this helps.
