Hello, this problem that seems like it should be fairly straight forward has been driving me crazy for hours!!!!!! I have a shared folder on a file server in our network. We map our users to it, but it has a "Read Only" attribute.

I go into Properties, uncheck "Read Only", click apply, and then close, but when I go back into properties the "Read Only" attribute is checked again. Help!!!!!

If you can't read it, what is the point of sharing it? This would probably be the reason for not allowing you to remove "read only" permissions. If you dont want them to read any data, just remove them from the permissions of the shared folder. Seems simple unless I'm missing somthing here.

That attribute on 2003 folders can't be changed, it's that way by default and doesn't actually effect the content. Do a search on this forum and you'll see several threads already discussing the issue.

Hi, I did a search for "read only" on the forum before my first post and received a "Sorry, the query 'read only' produced no results. Use the Search form below to search again."

Could you point me in the direction of some of these posts because we're having trouble appending PDF's with FileMaker because it is getting write access errors?

Hi there, I did find that knowledge base article also, and I followed to the letter and it did not work... that is very, very odd!!! This is really starting to bother me, especially since my boss is on me to get this corrected ASAP. What else can I do, any ideas?

Is it causing a problem? That checkbox is usually checked, and shouldn't have any impact on performance.

Also - please don't cross-post.

I am pretty sure I have not cross posted... it is effecting performance, our users are unable to save files to the hard drive

I'm not sure if this will help but have you tried taken owner of the folder by going into the security tab, advanced, Owner. Select yourself and select apply. This should populate your name as the owner. Now try removing the check and seeing if it sticks.

Yes, and it did not work. I can not write files to the networked folder.

Did you give the network users permission to the folder? The "read only" attribute is not the issue here.

Have you verified NTFS *AND* Sharing permissions?

I have to backup Davetoo here. This has always caused confusion on Windows 2003 Server. You can uncheck Read Only, but it will always default back. I don't think it is your issue. As 58Sniper suggested check both NTFS and Sharing permissions. Also remember, if these users are members of any groups that have Deny, they will not be able to access the folder.

It could be the parent folder that's propagating it's ACL properties the the child folder. You can stop this. On the Security tab look under the Advanced option.

I am having the same problem. My network folder is not inheriting properties, my share permissions are correct, my NTFS permissions are correct. But still no one can save to this network folder. As a matter a fact, the group who are trying to save to the folder has full control over that folder. I have to disagree with you guys about the "Read-Only" not being the problem. Because it is telling them that the folder is read-only and they can't write to it. What else could the problem be.

What happens when you open the share on the local server (not as the share, but simply the folder) and copy a file to it?

When I do that I can save to it. But when accessing over the network we are denied permission - that's even when logged in as the Administrator.

Then it's not a Read-only issue. The permissions are not set properly somewhere. Make sure it's not inheriting permissions, set the share permissions to everyone and the security permissions to everyone and verify you can save to the folder. Then start backing out of the permissions.

I have done exactly that in troubleshooting - opened up sharing and permissions to allow all full control (I know it's not secure, but just trying to troubleshoot). Also, have made sure no permissions are being inherited from a parent directory... I am just about to lose my mind, and I didn't have much to start with...

i had the same problem a couple month ago with one of my customers and managed to change it as follow

1) click on security tab and click advanced
2) deny "all" the users group (make sure to check the check box on the bottom for subfolders permissinos as well
3) click OK and then apply
4) Then click advanced again and give the users group Allow "all" permissions or whatever permission you want to give them

If this doesnt work try to change the owner of the folder and then try these steps again

I will try my best to help others so will others do!!!!!
