call coverage and call pick-up

So we just upgraded from CM6.0 to CM10.1 and a user has brought something to my attention. Their department has a call answer-group that delivers most of their calls. sometimes the caller is transferred to a specific extension in the group and they're set to cover to the answer-group. one of the users claims that when a call is transferred to his station directly and covers to the group, his pickup key used to work to grab the call back. now it clearly does not work when calls to roll to cover. the pickup key works normally otherwise. is he confused or is there an option I can change? I can't find anything relating to call pickup and answer groups or coverage. His station is in both the coverage answer-group and the pickup group.
