Hello,

Can anyone tell me if Borland Visual dBase 5.5 will enable you to create stand-alone\royalty free applications?

Are they stable under newer OS's like Windows 2k and XP?

Thanks very much,

Michael

Visual dbASE 5.5 does NOT automatically have a compiler shipped with it.

I purchased vers 5.7 two years ago when dbase.com was having a special offer. The cd came with a compiler.

Visual dBASE 5.5 had 2 further versions (5.6 then 5.7) which had a number of bug fixes.

As much as I love dBASE for DOS, I found Visual dBASE quite unstable. I Cannot speak for version 7.0 onwards as I have never used them. I have only used Win 98.

My suggestion would be to either migrate to another piece of development software (Delphi/ VB/ C++) etc or if you want to stick with dBASE, speak to users of 7.0 or later.

i have been using visualdb 5.5 for years, (from 95,98, to xp.) works fine. also the ADD-ON compiler. it is maddening but once mastered, great. proablems ocour when you ask it to do other then it saya it will do. as we all know, ALL dbase programing depends on PURE logic. The upgrades provided by dbase.com i found more trouble then help and went back to the original 5.5 and have writter a rather complex payroll program which you will find posted (free trial) @ paybear2k.com. you are welcome to download it and judje for yourself.
i have since gone on to 'C' and would be willing to sell both the dbase 5.5 disks and the compiler disk.

I have a VERY STABLE VdB 5.7 application that has grossed $1M+ for my company and works great from 95 to XP.

Keeping with the evolution of O/S' and users demands, I have completed the porting to dBase Plus. Both versions are HIGHLY STABLE.
