Blocked ICS?

Here's the deal... My ICS was working then stopped. I tried doing several system recoveries and a repair of the XP installation. Each time the ICS would work for maybe 30 min. but then would just stop. I've tried all that I know and that I can find on the on the various KBs within and outside Microsoft.

My question is this. Is there any bug, virus/worm that can disable the ICS. I use Norton NIS2003 an check for new updates daily so I don't know how this could have happened but I know for sure there is someting in my computer besides wires!

When you say it stops working what happens exactly?
Do you receive any error messages?
Can you send and receive email messages?
Can you ping websites? i.e. ping

If you restart your machines does the ICS start working again for a while?
What internet connection do you have? Some ISP's have the technology in place to stop you using ICS.

Whooo, ICS is far from perfect but there are tons of other factors that could be responsible.

My guess is that there are subtle sides of ICS that at some point got broken. The ICS host has to have a specific IP of 192.18.0.1, has to have access to its HOST file to make entries, has to have a specific Computername in its System properties, has to have dynamic DNS name entry enabled in its clients, .etc.

In all cases ICS is easy to setup and easy to screwup.

You cannot use ICS without problems in the presence of any other DNS or DHCP server of any kind.

. If the HOST or clients are receiving DHCP request returns from any other DHCP server, modem or router, it will not work;

. If the HOST is not configured to refer to itself as DNS server, i.e. there are entries for the WAN-side DNS servers, it will not work;

. If the CLIENT has anything other than 192.168.0.1 as a DNS entry, it will not work.

You can use a firewall with ICS. But get it working properly before introducing a firewall of any kind. Be carefull of the default XP firewall on HOST or CLIENT. Be carefull of "hidden" firewalls from antivirus programs. P C-Illan is notorious at the moment for killing local LAN and ICS. There are others. Start clean, then slowly introduce firewalls and antivirus to your system.

The host machine has full unfettered access to the Interent. However, it cannot access the Intranet workgroups, soemthing I hadn't noticed beofore. The client can ping all the way through 3 ORiNOCO AP1000 radios on campus but cannot ping the gateway router nor VSAT modem. As far as I know I have not set up any such things blocking ICS but any pointers in just how I would do this might be of help.

Oncee the client (any client) has ben able to access the Internet through the host within 30 min they are offline. Now warnings no errors in the Event Logs. Nothing. I've stripped everything out of the startup process but still nothing. I've take both machines off the Workgroup and made them a part of the default WORKGROUP. Still no connectivity.

The only times I've been able to connect is after a major recovery to a date over 30 days off. But I'm running out of those where the connection worked. The repair worked twice now but the exact same phnomenom of the ICS working for only a few minutes and then poof. Microsoft is stumped on this and say that I will have to re-install the OS. This is a ajoe pain in the but as I have to make a International Long Distance phone call to get a new registration number. I'm desperatly trying to avoid this!

It sounds as if the wireless adapters are losing authentication with the APs.

1. On the Host be certain 802.1x authentication is disabled;

2. Remove Hotfix Q815485;

Your intranet issue may be because ICS is placing the clients on a different subnet from the other workgroups.

I do not have that one on my machine as I have only updated to SP2 (SP1a sometimes called). I also have turned off automatic updates to make sure I go over each and every thing they try and store on my machine. On more than one ocassion MSFT has screwed my installation up with one of their "fixes".

Anyway the 802.1x authentification has always been disabled and never was in the equasion. Still, it is nice to know I'm thinking of the same things as the rest of my tech fellows. ;-)

I'm more and more looking for the fresh install anyway as I've got a 160GB drive I'm itiching to install. I'll split it into 4 drives to seperate things better so hopefully this kind of crap will not hinder me in the future. Ah... but we are taking about MSFT aren't we! UGh!
