There are no real guidelines for this thread, and it's not intended to be a comparison. It's just an opportunity to let people share their thoughts.

Just thought I's check !!!!! ..... I mean I liked The Office - UK version starring Ricky Gervais (like his comedy stuff too) but thought the little of The American Office I saw was dire.

Grew up with Robin's Nest, Terry and June, Rising Damp, Steptoe and Son, Man about the House, Faulty Towers (Baaaasilll) etc etc here might help But really got into stuff later on in life - Red Dwarf, Frasier etc

Here might be interesting too.

There can't be a definitive top ten (IMHO) as there are just so many candidates !!!!!

What's the definition for sitcom.

But the Simpsons have my vote.

And I liked Full house (with the olsen twins).

And Family matters (with Steve Q Urkel).

And Family Ties had it's moments.

Keeping up appearances (with the Bucket woman)

And the good life (with Tom and Barbara and their neighbours)

I also like King of Queens.

And My family before the cast change.

I love that new show "Psyche" on USA Network. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

"Cheers" is still my all time favorite though.

In the 'worst' category, my vote has to go to Love Thy Neighbour
Whilst there may have been many others which were objectively worse, Love Thy Neighbour wins my vote by actually achieving respectable ratings at the time. Bill Bryson satirises it in 'Notes From A Small Island' by calling it 'My Neighbour's a NigNog' which pretty much summarizes the appalling bigotry involved. Whereas 'Till Death Us Do Part' was mocking the bigots, Love Thy Neighbour, whilst attempting the same trick, was pandering directly to the little Englanders petty bigotries. A truly appalling show.

Black Books would have to be my favourite, although can some animations be considered sitcoms? If so, I would have to consider Family Guy.

Worst, well there are so many to choose. I personally detest programs such as Friends.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

What consitutes a sitcom? Basically any snydicated comedy, or is it more inclusive than that?

A sitcom, or Situation comedy, in my under standing is a series of shows based around a standard set of circumstances.

e.g.

The Simpsons is based around the Simpson family

Blackadder is based around the Blackadder family tree and associates

Fawlty Towers is based around the Hotel.

A show that features locations or character, but not mostly about those places or people, is a sketch show. A good example of this is Little Britain. Despite continous characters and situations(Only Gay in the Village, Lou and Andy, Vicky Pollard), it is safe to say this is a Sketch show.

Think that makes sense

My favorites are:

Wings
Murphy Brown
Scrubs (50% of the time, the 50% I hate it)
Grace Under Fire
Simpsons and South Park (if they truely count since they are animated? If so add those two.)

My all-time favorite though... Saved By the Bell, Middle School through the 2nd to last season in High School (When Kelly Kapowski left the show should have ended). Screetch is by far the best Sitcom character ever.

Those I would classify as 'worst' include most of the ones I loved as a kid:

Full House
Step-by-Step
Family Matters
Almost anything on TGIF - great for a kid, terrible now

(I'm going to upset a lot of people here...)
Seinfeld. By far the worst sitcom ever (well that I've ever seen more than 3 episodes of)

The best: Seinfeld

The worst: I don't waste my time remembering them
