When under services the BCM returns the following.
"Telephony programming is not avaiable. A connection to the MSC has not been established. Plear try again later."
BCM 400
release 3.0.1 Build 7 iss 1.
Any ideas anyone anyone bueler?

Check to see what version of JAVA you are running. It should be using ver 1.4.2.

I have that version of java and the same thing occurs when you highlight Services. I had another user try also and the same thing occurs when he attempts to highlight that services menu.

Have you tried a cold reboot(pull the plug)

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

I found where under diagnostics if you can do a warm reset on the MSC service / card that this is prefered to a cold boot. My boss says we are not Microsoft and avoid cold reboots if possible and if reboot is needed that a proper shutdown is the way to go.

What does he mean "we are not microsoft and avoid cold reboots if possible and if reboot is needed that a proper shutdown is the way to go"?

Hey Ace what I mean is rather than pulling the plug physically out of the wall and counting to 10 is not always the solution despite what you may think. Minimal impact to end-users is the preferred course of action in my world. FYI I found that patches are missing and should keep this from occurring in the future but hey thanks for all the help everyone.

I didn't think you could get patches for that old Rls anymore.

You should upgrade to 3.6 or 3.7 or even 4.0

If this happens go to Services manager and it will display all the services running, scroll down to the bottom and look for telphonysubsystem, cant remember the exact name but you will see what i mean. Right click it and stop and start the service. Once back up you should be able to get in to telephony services.

In my 13 years of Nortel Norstar or BCM service I ALWAYS cold reboot. Never had an issue, because a warm reset is a waste of time.

A reset only goes so far. A cold reboot is the way to go. It is a good idea to leave it uplugged for at least 5 minutes.

Sorry if I'm going over old ground but could a cold reboot mean the sytem might not come back on at all?

I'd say I'm a middle ground tech user in charge of an office of 12 and we have no support on our BCM. I've logged on twice before to change the Extension Number Names under Telephony Services and this time I got the same message as at the start of this thread... Am slightly worried about rebooting it and breaking the whole thing just for a name change! Any words of caution / encouragement? Ta

Look at the front of the BCM and see if the 10 LEDs on the bottom left are flashing, if they are you need to pull out the (BFT) Base function Tray, thats the one with the flashing LEDs and look at the capacitor's, if they are GREEN they are BAD, if they are BLUE they are good and it needs to be repaired, Nortel is still fixing then until I think 7/08 for free but you need to go though a Nortel partner. you can plug it back in and it should be back within 20 min.

If you don't have a Nortel partner you can send the (BFT) to this Vendor and he will repair it.

OK thanks. Just looked and only 1 LED is flashing - second one along... mean anything?

That is the HD working.

Well unless you want to call a Nortel Partnar, the only recource is to do a cold reboot. and I'll bet he does the cold reboot.

I'll see how brave I feel - and how necessary just changing the names is!

Thanks for your help.
