I have a broadband connection which i share using a router (Dlink 704p)its not a wireless router. The computer is attached on it(i laptop and 2 desktops). How can i share folders with the other computer attached to the router? Thanks in advance

Lara19,

You need to restart the Browser Service. Set it to Automatic.

"The Computer Browser service provides the computer lists displayed in My Network Places."

Without the Browser service you won't be able to Browse the Network.

Also, do both of your computers belong to the same workgroup?

im not sure about that(being on the same workgroup) DO i have to give a name for each comp?

Did you restart the Browser Service?

About Workgroups,

Right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Click the Computer Name tab.

About mid-way down you will see;

Full Computer Name (this is the name of your computer)
Workgroup Name (this is the name of your Workgroup)

Both of your PC's should have the same name for Workgroup.

If they do not, you need to put them into the same Workgroup.

So, from where you are, go to the bottom of the window, and you will see;

To Rename this computer or join a Domain, click Change...

Go ahead and click Change. At the bottom of this window will be the name for your Workgroup. Enter the same name here as your other PC has for it's Workgroup.

i restared the comp browser service and named the comps. the workgroup name is workbook (default name). what should i do next?

The name of the workgroup is MSHOME. what do i do next?

Both computers belong to the MSHOME workgroup, and both are on the same network. So, now what happens when you open up My Netork Places, do you see the other computer in there now?

can i use the network setup wizard in windows xp? would it interfere with my router configuration?

Lara19,

I have never used the XP Network Setup Wizard myself. Always done it manually so I don't know exactly what it does for you. Most likely won't hurt.

I am curious if you can access your other machine via command line.

Click Start
Click Run
Type \\computername (where computername is the name of the other machine on your home network that you are trying to get into).

Let me know if this opens up a connection to the other PC.

theres an error:
no network provider accepted the given network path

Okay, are you logged in using a 'user name' and password? Does the same 'user name' and password exist on the other machine?

Have you tried to turn off the firewall and test out whether or not you can browse without it on?

Check to see if Simple File Sharing is turned on.

Open Windows Explorer or My Computer, click the Tools menu, click Folder Options, click the View tab. Is the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) box checked?

I log on using a username and password in this comp. but i dont have an account in the other comp.

Yes the simple file sharing is checked

I did it. but when i tried to open my workgroup(MSHOME) the same error appears.

This is the complete error message when i tried to open MSHOME workgroup

MSHOME is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.

The list of of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

make an account on the other computer that is identical to the one you are usng on your computer.
