has a list of banished words such as

BLUE STATES/RED STATES – “A good map has more than two colors.”

ENEMY COMBATANT – “Makes no sense. Do we have friendly combatants? Neutral combatants? Or how about enemy bystanders? If they are your enemy, just say so.”

IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE – As opposed to what used to be referred to as a bomb or mine. “Is this anything like a bomb or is it more (or less) sinister?”

YOU’RE FIRED! – “…and the little hand movement, too!”

‘IZZLE’ – SPEAK - “Like Superbowl excesses, it is too much of too much,”

WARDROBE MALFUNCTION - [ahem]

BLOG – and its variations, including blogger, blogged, blogging, blogosphere. Many who nominated it were unsure of the meaning. Sounds like something your mother would slap you for saying.

ZERO PERCENT APR FINANCING– sending a dollar to do a nickel’s worth of work. “They could just say ‘no interest.’

ALL NEW – referring to television shows… “Of course it’s all new. Why can’t they just say ‘new’?

JOURNEY – “Every single person on every reality show comments on how amazing the ‘journey’ was. Since when does dating a dozen nerds over a six-week span or conniving to win a million dollars over 15 other people qualify as a ‘journey’”?

CARBS – low carbs, high carbs, no carbs, carb-friendly… Meant ‘carburetor’ in a previous life. Needs to be purged from our system.

A svelte word banishment committee, fresh from a low-carb diet, said the process of selecting this year’s words was an amazing journey through hundreds of nominations.

What are your candidates for banishment?

As John suggests, let's try and go back to the original thread -- it was fun when it lasted.[sad]

couldn't resist

I'll throw in a pet peeve word as payment for my ride on this thread: Bling, Bling-Bling, King-of-Bling, etc

It makes the speaker sound as intelligent as salt.

Roll me in oil and lick the paint from my bathroom, Thad, because I'm all outa salt, and we should, NAY MUST, banish the phrase "at this moment in time".

Because it means "NOW"

Shoot, I've gone adrift from this thread's ethos, which is...

The words we use and how we use them often reflect our professionalism. Light-hearted discussions on words, word usage, grammar, and related topics to improve our ability to communicate effectively and help project the right image.

okay so if there is a differance and it is printed somewhere please send the definition,we can agree to disagree but any way you cut it they are both very wrong!!!
MURDER is having your life taken at the hands of someone else and KILLING could also be seen as the same thing
however, would we see it the same way in a act of war such as the war that is going on now???? ERM... I WONDER????

Beachbaby - How do you feel about killing in self-defense? Kill or Die - take your pick.

Good Luck

Beachbaby,

Did you read my post?

I respect that in a situation of self-defense you might choose to leave this world having never taken a human life.

But would you kill in defense of your child, your spouse, your siblings or parents? If you thought there was a real danger that a madman was about to murder someone you love, would you not consider killing him? Even if the answer is "no", would you judge that someone who does act to save another life has committed "murder"? Would you consider his actions to be just as bad as any cold-blooded killer?

What if you shoot him before he sees you is that still "self defense"?

hawks,
What if you shoot him before he sees you is that still "self defense"?

In that case, it would be a topic of another discussion on another forum.

As for the words, air conditioner falling out of your window (you know, as in "Seinfeld") can kill, but it cannot murder. So is hurricane, car accident, and so on.

But if you throw said air conditioner out of your window for purpose of killing someone, and it did, then you commited murder.

What if you’re on a battleship and launch a missile is that murder or killing?

hawks - That is a good question, but it's not really appropriate for this forum. You might want to consider Squaring the Circle Forum1229 as a good place for that discussion.

As far as I understand it, on a battleship it's always a killing, as you are there for a purpose of war in general, and not for a purpose of killing a particular person. But, say, if you didn't volunteer to go to military, but were drafted even though you feel very strongly against it, then you might probably call it a murder - to amplify the impact of the words. But strictly speaking, it would still be a killing/casualties/fatalities.

This is as far as meaning of words go. As for philosophical/ethical meaning, as CC, this forum is not the right place for this kind of discussion.

Murder is a legal term that is defined differently by different govermental agencies. Individuals who use it often redefine it to suit their own beliefs, feelings, tastes, and current emotional state, then want to insist that their definition of the moment is the correct one. The word, like many others, has a lot of emotional charge to it, and is sometimes used to get reactions from others because of that. It ends up being a game that people play for power, either to gain and/or keep political power or to control other people's emotions.

yes I have seen all the definitions of the topic and nothing can change the way that I feel about the MURDER and KILLING.

beachbaby,

But this forum more about language and words, not about feelings. Even if your feelings are the same about both, the meaning is not.

While both are about a loss of life (although killing is not always about that), killing is not always about people. And often is not intentional. And often is not done by people. Again, while you can still have strong feelings about a loss of life in general, it doesn't equate the words.

Would killing a dog in a car accident be a murder, then? Would people killed by tsunami be at the same time victims of a murder? Does nicotine murder a horse? If you have a few hours to kill, are you going to commit a murder? If your shoes are killing you, would you call police and report murder?

You don't have to answer.
Just think - about the meaning of words, not about the loss of life.

And this all started because someone argued for a position not supported in any source yet cited, except one which was overly selective in drawing from its own source.

And then no admission later "I guess you're right that fratricide can refer to friendly fire.
