My machine had been running fine. It locked up on a reboot at the Windows logo, it will not boot from there. When you try to boot in safe mode, you get the blue screen of death with an error "BAD_POOL_CALLER". From everything I read this could be caused by numerous things. I have loaded no new software etc. It will not boot from the OS CD can't get to operating system at all. Time for a new hard drive? The machine is a Dell XPS 400 about 18 months old. I have worked on alot of errors, I have never seen this one. Any insight would be appreciated.

First things first...

run a memory test, ie. MemTest86+ and run a full scan... that way you are sure that the memory is not at fault or is the culprit...

then read what else could cause the issues...

Also running from the RECOVERY CONSOLE, CHKDSK /F on the ROOT drive, might be useful if the HDD has gotten corrupted...

and he can't boot from the CD?

I use a Linux LiveCD to test for hardware problems.

are good alternatives, but my favorit is
This one is so small that it loads everything into RAM,
you can then remove the CD so you can use the drive
to burn out backups of your files if you need to.
You can even boot with the harddrive disconnected.

Unplug the Data cable from the HD and then try the CD or a Bootable Floppy. If you can boot then it is the HD with the problem

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

You will have to download files from Microsoft to put onto Floppies to achieve this.

You will have some access if you can load the XP Recovery Console onto the machine.
