Bad DirectSound Drive Error! No Sound whatsoever!

Well, I have searched far and wide beyond the 10 pages
of google search, yet, EVERY TOPIC STARTED ABOUT THIS
ERROR WAS NEVER RESOLVED.

The error occurs within Winamp, when clicking on a song:
"Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or
select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780032"

Funny thing is, that I got Winamp to work before, however,
after trying ot reinstall DirectX and My Soundblaster drivers, it simply wouldn't anymore.

Things I have tried:

-Reinstalling DirectX
-Reinstalling Sound Drivers
-Uninstalling Both Direct X and Sound Drivers
-Reinstalling a fresh new DirectX and Sound Drivers

NONE WORKED. Every Technical support forum I have been to
that had this topic seemed to somehow end, with the user
unable to solve this problem.

PLEASE! PLEASE! Help. I tried everything, and I know that
someone here can find out a solution or has experienced
this problem before.

Remember, I already reinstalled directX, and my drivers.
This has to be some kind of inturreption with the OS Services
and or software with my soundcard.

I disabled all the services (aside from the essentials and
the Windows Sound service).

Scanned for viruses with McAfee and removed all of them.

Have you any Sound at all?

What file version of Dsound.dll did you end up with after all the re-installing of DirectX (what did you use to uninstall it)?

How does WMP function, does it give you the same type of error, try both WMP 9 and WMP 6 which is still included with XP (as Mplayer2.exe).

Have you removed any Adware from WinAmp (if it has any installed), or tried re-installing WinAmp?

Did you get any further clues if you ran DxDiag from the Start Run box?

Is your Sound Card fitted correctly?

How long ago did this problem begin? Have you searched in the Event Viewer (for about this time) to see what it says in there?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with WinAmp.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

You can usually chose between atleast 2 diffrent sound output drivers in Winamp have you tried changing from the one causing problem see if the other one works better.

I used to use winamp under Windows XP and Soundblaster Live and it worked fine.

You don't have a built-on sound on your motherboard thats maybe interfearing with your Soundblaster card. If you have onboard please disable it completly in your bios.

AHH! the problem is back!
It came back because I went to play CS after a restart
and I got no sound.

I went into dx diag, and when I select Soundblaster to play under the music tab, it works, but when the microsoft synthersiezer is selected, it can't fin the driver.

Also, you can see this error that occurs for some reason:

I don't get this, I had a fresh windows install and it
worked, but now, all of sudden, everything is messed up
again.

I checked the BIOS, and Onboard AC97 sound is disabled.

In the bios you usually have to disable more than one thing to totally disable the sound...

After you experience this problem do you have any sound? If you look under Hardware-Device Manager do you have any errors under sound?

You sure you got the exactly the right drivers for your sound card?

Does your problem only start after you play CS? Maybe you need to patch the game.

I checked dxdiag on my box at work and noticed that you had two fields blank Manufacturer ID & Product ID, so it seems what ever happend has corrupted your drivers.

Meh.... I reinstalled my drivers and my DirectX like 10
times already, I don't knwo if that s the prolem.

And yes, I am positive I have the right drivers, I got them
from the creative website (the newest ones).

This problem is not ONLY in CS. It's in everything else
EXCEPT for winamp, and I guess Winamp is working because
I went to preferences and MANUALLY selected the soundblaster
as the output device for sound. Without manually selecting,
the device was "default" or something like that.

Is there a way to set it so that EVERY sound will be and
output from the Soundblaster in Windows? I think there is
something wrong with windwos trying to take over the sound.

Check that Microsoft GS Wavetable Synthesis is your default MIDI program:
In Control Panel, double-click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.

hmm, that's the wierd thing, I can go to the audio devices,
but for some reason, Windows will simply NOT see my
sound card.

but in the control panel audio devices, nothing is there.

From the screenshot it does look like a driver problem. As it was working shortly after your re-install you could try a few of these suggestions to see if they make any difference.

I tried to use the system restore, but I couldn't
get the date, the earliest I can go is the day
the problem started, and everything was already a mess
then.

I did notice that some files are unsigned, including
a "direct" file, for some reason.

What do unsigned files mean?

As for safe mod, I haven't checked, but during my next post

1.Try to direct your system to the drivers through the device manager and if that dosnt reconize your drivers youll know that there not wright or vise versa

2.Make sure that you have unsighned drivers turned off

3.make sure the administrator account is used for installing the drivers

To make more sense of your output from the Driver Verifyer tool, set it up like this.

Verify Unsigned Device Drivers.

Click Start, click Run, type sigverif, and then click OK.
Click Advanced.
Click Look for other files that are not digitally signed.
In the Look in this folder box, type x:\Windows\system32\drivers, where x is the letter of the drive where Windows XP is installed.
On the Logging tab, make sure the Save the file signature verification results to a log file check box is selected, and then click OK.
Click Start.

This will just check your drivers and not every other Windows file.

This will then give you a list of any unsigned drivers to begin troubleshooting.

An unsigned driver is one that has not been submitted to Microsoft for testing to make sure it works on the operating system properly. An unsigned driver doesn't mean the driver is bad, just that Microsoft don't know if it works or not.

Guys, I think the problem could be Windows Media Player 10 Beta

I just installed it around a week ago or so, and the
problem started a couple of days later.

Could this be it?

for some reason, I cna't uninstall it, when in the "Add/remove programs" window from control panel, I press uninstall, but what it does is "rollback" to the previous versoin. But it doesn't even roll back! IT STAYS AT VERSION 10!

Could this be what caused this mayham?

A Beta program of anything is a gamble to run.
Did your recent repair of Windows as per 315341 not revert the version of WMP to the one on the XP CD?

Are you referring to the main page of Add or Remove or the Windows Components section of Add or Remove? Where did WMP 10 uninstall option place itself?

Normally WMP cannot be removed from XP (other than by a repair installation of XP or System Restore). WMP 10 Beta may be different, I have no experience with it. Does it have any uninstall program in the WMP 10 folder? You could try whatever uninstall option you have from within Safe Mode.

You may have to contact the site you obtained it from in the first place.

Well, I downloaded it from Microsoft.com
I just thought it would fix a few things
that 9 didn't. But I still don't understand how it
would cause such a huge problem with the hardware
or software.

Here is the sum up of pretty much what happens

When I press Change/Remove for windows media player 10 beta,
it would say "Can't remove software, but will roll back
to the last version you had". BUT IT DOESN'T! It just
completes the setup, and when I load WMP, it's STILL beta 10!

Also, I just tried to reinstall DirectX,
and all of sudden, it said that this didn't
pass microsoft Windows XP testing! WTF?! Microsoft
MADE the product!

What options have you selected under Driver Signing in Control Panel/ System/ Hardware? Have you got it checked to block installation?

This specifies that device drivers without a digital signature cannot be installed. The installation process stops when attempting to install an unsigned device driver.

Have a look at the options you have listed there. Maybe blocking it is interfering with the uninstall procedure.


From looking at your screenshot it is not clear as to whether you are trying to remove the Runtime Format Beta, or the actual WMP 10 which is listed below it.
